#MyFirstBirdoftheDay

Two large mobs of crows opening the day with somewhere to go while a blackbird worm-hopped on short grass. The cold sun yellowed the pale purple sky towards blue and further down the path, made an eery green of the low horizon. Lots of birds sang in the dark trees.

My first bird of the day.

For the third day running it's a Song Thrush, but possibly a different bird, as he's singing about 200m away from the stand of trees where the year's most vocal bird usually is.

There has been song from one of these birds for easily ¾ of the year.

A belated entry. A heron, barely discernable in the river with the light just easing into existence

I think it was an immature sedge #warbler that was hopping around in the escallonia, flicking its tail. #MyFirstBirdOfTheDay

A stream, with a white wading little egret fishing. Its feet are barely covered by the water, its waterline is so low. Green blade grass converge near the bank on the right hand side. To the fore of the picture, the riverweed is exposed in the slow moving wate, and it looks a bit sludgy from this distance. The brown bank slopes uneven and a little broken down towards the river. The grass is mostly brow. A clump of hardy flowers or a low shrub clings in green with its feet in the water

A startled flock of goldfinch when I checked the bee bar had water. On a very quiet walk to work, a Swan and then this little chap, a Little Egret

#Myfirstbirdoftheday A juvenile herring gulls is hanging out on the roofs around our home (not my photo). The youngster is still a fledgling and squeals pleadingly to be fed a lot! It's been around for a week and has got the hang of flying and is less clumsy now.

#MyFirstBirdOfTheDay might've been its first #tallhumancreaturethingoftheday. I glanced up from my coffee and book and there she was, just on the other side of the lanai, a Red-shouldered Hawk (juvenile, I suspect) in a Live Oak Tree some 20' away. After 20 seconds, she did a 270 and was gone.

#MyFirstBirdOfTheDay is a blackbird pecking up sultanas, then staring over at a pair of crows and a huge magpie on a rooftop. No! it's their gangly-legged young one, still with some of its white feathers

Behind shut doors and summer home hum, a Barred Owl hooted in thunder.

#MyFirstBirdOfTheDay was a pair of goldfinches on the nyger feeder. I don't normally feed this far into the year but it's been so cold I felt like the birds needed a bit extra!

A bevvy of birds on our feeders, including long-tailed tits, bullfinces, and two jackdaws that hack at our suet slab with the enthusiasm of gold miners.
