April: Litter Bit Better
Earth Day is another great opportunity to address vaping. Commercial tobacco products like vapes are considered hazardous waste as well as e-waste due to the batteries they use. #NA360
Ghost Your Vape event slide with photos
The presenters reflected on another event: “We learned that having a large, obnoxious backdrop helped draw in more people.” The theme was “ghost your vape” and they had a hazardous waste disposal bin where people could dispose their vapes. A good theme for an October event! #NA360
Percent of students who vaped within the last 30 days —bar graph
Eff the Vape presentation at NACCHO360. “Working toward better youth health outcomes requires youth input.” The presenters also emphasize that based on their conversations with adolescents, these numbers from the Minnesota student survey are likely significant underestimates. #NA360
Happening today! Come join us & fellow @PHAwakened network members for a happy hour this evening at #NA360 in Denver, CO!

📽️Catch a full recording of last week’s #NA360 panel to hear from our Co-Director Lili Farhang, @Katie_balderas & Tram Nguyen @Dare2BWell on how local public health depts are collaborating w/ community organizers to shift power & confront health inequity:
bit.ly/NA36079
"It's critical that we maintain trust in our health and social services...invest time in your relationships...skin in the game really means – how do you recognize that your liberation is tied up with the liberation of your community?" @katie_balderas #NA360
As #PublicHealth we must focus on shifting health narratives & power to support #HealthEquity.
"Language is a public health issue – access to information is critical." @katie_balderas on the power of community partnerships to build language access policies for #PubHealth #NA360
Tram Nguyen of @Dare2BWell on addressing structural racism at the root of health inequities through community partnerships with a focus on the #SDOH and housing inequity #NA360
"If we want to respond to the ongoing threats that Black and Brown people face, and in particular in the context of police and state violence that we’re in the midst of debating, we have to address this context." - Farhang, #NA360
These collaborations are crucial. #PublicHealth does not have the power to make change on its own!
Community organizers focus on the #SDOH that we as #PubHealth care about, & are important partners in advancing & winning policy changes that support #HealthEquity. #NA360
"We encourage health departments to work with grassroots, base-building organizations because these groups are well organized, and have an analysis of structural oppression and power as the root drivers of wellbeing." - Farhang, #NA360
Specifically, we focus on structural racism as a root cause of #HealthInequity:
"One of the ways that we think #PublicHealth can confront these root causes more explicitly is through deeper collaborations with community organizers — who have a theory of power." - Farhang, #NA360
"Our theory of change at HIP is that inequities in health are driven by an unequal distribution of power between communities, which are maintained by different systems of advantage and oppression." - Lili Farhang, #NA360
