The NY Times and other news outlets reported that GSFC decreased its workforce by 11%.
This figure is misleading; the actual reduction was significantly higher. Here are at least two reasons why:
1- Timing of Retirements: These statistics are from November 2025, a

NASA will finally have a 2026 budget and an administrator
but still not good news for Earth Sciences.
Despite the title of this article, I take issue with this "better" scenario. It may reflect the author’s bias.

The closure of the Goddard library is more than a logistics issue—it is an assault on knowledge itself.
NASA is the home of humanity’s most consequential expeditions, yet vandals are about to gut our accumulated archives under the guise of "reorganization".

Goddard library is scheduled to close starting Jan/2.
Many attempts in the past to do it have failed. This time feels very ominously real.
No replacement is planned.
Library personnel have been told to work on inventory and plan for a 90% disposal of the material.

Well, that was a bit unimpressive. There were too many general statements praising ingenuity and hard work, and invoking the past quests for which NASA is famous. It is hard to see how we can get back to any of that after the beating we’ve taken over the last 10 months.

A long (and thoughtful) article on the future of Earth Observations by NASA and the role of commercial services.
There are no easy answers.
But one should start by laying out the problem and this article is a good start.

Well, it's been a week back at the office.
My first impression from driving around campus was that I did not notice major physical changes, and I saw parking lots filled with about the same number of cars as before the shutdown (including those at buildings deemed to

There is a misconception that "Because you work at NASA, you will easily get a job after leaving"
I heard this over and over again when I say where I work.
Well, it is not like that at all, not in the case of scientists working in Earth Sciences (ES).

I agree with the post and most of the comments in this post by @nasawatch.bsky.social , as they reflect what I see at Goddard.
Management here and at Headquarters (HQ) assume that even if Congress passes a friendlier budget, the money won't reach NASA.

Things that I have observed around me as we move towards the end of the fiscal year:
- Removal of a significant number of scientists: the majority are senior team leaders, although some are younger and left because they found jobs elsewhere.

The shortsightedness of these decisions is staggering.
Yes, they are flooding the field, but they forget that after the flood, sediment remains—and it can take years for growth to return (if it does at all, since the sediment may be toxic, as it appears to be now).

Amidst all ominous signs at #NASA, it is a relief we no longer get those dreadful "Embrace the Challenge" emails from leadership every Friday.
