College leaders are often called upon to address the career-ready skills graduates will develop through their degree programs and co-curricular activities. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) list of eight “Career Competencies” framework is a recognized typology for these skills. This session, drawing from research at the University of New Hampshire Civil Discourse Lab and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education policy on civic learning, reaffirms that “civic learning should be complementary, not competitive, with other academic subjects, especially the liberal arts and sciences, and workforce preparation” (2014). We will share additional typologies of and rubrics for assessing civic skills. In a facilitated, interactive discussion, participants will explore areas of opportunity for institutions to align civic and career competencies in curricular and co-curricular programming and assessment and identify where they can embed the assessment of civic and career competencies in institutional, programmatic, course, and service-area levels.
