Stunning false-color image of the planetary nebula NGC 2440. This nebula, resembling a butterfly, is the ejected shell of gas from a dying star, at its center lies one of the hottest known white dwarfs. Our Sun will undergo a similar transformation in billions of years. Image post-processed by Forrest Hamilton.

Stunning Hubble image of the planetary nebula NGC 2440, a bow-tie shaped cloud of gas and dust expelled by a dying star. The nebula's intricate structure and the incredibly hot central star (200,000 Kelvin!) are clearly visible in this false-color image. Located 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Puppis, it spans over a light-year. This image showcases the continued impressive imaging capabilities of Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2.

False-color image of NGC 2440, a planetary nebula featuring a hot white dwarf star at its center. Resembling a butterfly's wings, this nebula is the cast-off shell of a dying star. Our sun will eventually undergo a similar transformation in billions of years. Image post-processed by Forrest Hamilton.
