NGC 4627 / NGC 4631 The Whale Galaxy / NGC 4657 - telescope processed image. The Whale Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away. Its "superwind" of hot gas, blown out by frequent supernovae, is visible to X-ray telescopes.
NGC 4627 / NGC 4631 The Whale Galaxy / NGC 4657 - unprocessed image. NGC 4627 is a dwarf elliptical galaxy known as the "Pup" that orbits the Whale Galaxy. NGC 4657 is the bright, warped "hook" of the Hockey Stick Galaxy. Both reside 30 million light-years away and are heavily distorted by gravitational interactions within the NGC 4631 group.
