As good weather returns, the Sun shows its best face — and it changes almost daily. Sunspots, active regions, granulation and flares constantly evolve. With upcoming eclipses over Extremadura, we launch The Sun in History: #archaeoastronomy and #ethnoastronomy alongside #astrophotography.

I processed my Soul Nebula data from my Death Valley trip a couple of weeks ago. This is a big star formation region in Cassiopeia, 6,500 light years away.

This is 116 two minute subs, shot with an astro modified Canon EOS R8 and an Askar 71f (490mm f/l) […]

What must it be like to see the Moon up close, for the first time in over 50 years?
When Artemis II will send images of the Lunar surface back to Earth, we will see the first glimpse of our future. 🧵

Shape: It has a circular, floral shape with a hollowed-out center, which is why it is commonly called the "Rosette". Some observers also refer to it as the Skull Nebula due to how the gas is carved.
Colors: The glowing orange and red areas are primarily made of hydrogen gas. The blue and white sections in the center represent other gases, like oxygen, being pushed away by young stars.

The Pleiades. Shot in Long Beach CA. Happy at least some of the reflection nebulosity can be seen. 4 hours of total exposure time with an UV-IR filter on a ASI2600MC and a Redcat 51 scope. Does anyone else shoot in a Bortle 8-9 location? Any tips or suggestions are welcome! 🤗

Astro System Comparison Tool — Cosgrove's Cosmos Use this astrophotography system comparison tool to compare scopes, cameras, reducers, sampling, field of view, and imaging efficiency side by side.

How much exposure on one astro rig equals 10 hours on another?

I built a free comparison tool to answer that — with optics, QE, filters, sky, mono/OSC, and broadband/narrowband all in the model.

Try it:

Just got published in Astronomy Ireland magazine 🚀

My image of the Pac-Man Nebula (NGC 281), captured with a Seestar S30 — 64 mins of data bringing out those deep H-alpha reds.

Seeing it in print hits different. Backyard astronomy lives on 🌌

A wide-field astrophotography shot of the Fireworks Galaxy (NGC 6946) against a dark, star-speckled background. The galaxy is a face-on intermediate spiral, showing a bright, warm yellowish core surrounded by intricate, sweeping spiral arms. These arms are accented with subtle blue tones from young star clusters and vibrant pinkish-red patches indicating H II star-forming regions. The entire galaxy has a soft, ethereal glow, and the surrounding black space is dotted with numerous sharp, distant stars of varying brightness. A small white logo for Paramount Observatory is visible in the bottom right corner.

Whilst cloudy skies are still persisting here, spend a bit more time working on older data. This is my image of C12 the fireworks galaxy from August 2025. I do like this Galaxy with all it's star forming areas in it's spiral arms 🔭

With narrowband data, there is no correct color palette. 3 examples with the same data.
Option1: Red=SII, Green=HA, Blue=OIII
Option2: Same as option 1 but channels are balanced
Option3: Dynamic blending of red channel with SII and HA.

A photo of an Arizona landscape at night with the stars visible. In the lower right, there is a spot with a tail which could be a shooting star. There are dark tree silhouettes visible, some city lights in the background, and some of the red Arizona soil visible in the foreground.

One last photo from Arizona at night. I think this might be one of my favorites from the set because in the lower right, it looks like I might have caught a shooting star.

A high-contrast composite photograph of a nearly full moon centered in a dark, atmospheric sky. The moon is sharp and detailed, revealing prominent craters and lunar mares in shades of silver and grey. It is surrounded by a soft, luminous white glow that fades into layers of wispy, dark brown and charcoal clouds. At the very bottom of the frame, a thin line of low-lying, dark blue clouds sits against the black horizon, creating a sense of depth and scale.

The moon is a fun target to test my new refractor (ZenithStar 61) on while I wait for clearer and darker skies.

Just aiming this thing is tricky compared to the ball head I used with my 135mm.
