Today is World Prematurity Day, a day to celebrate the preemies among us and to educate about the need for good prenatal care. I was born at 26 weeks gestation weighing 2 pounds, three ounces, stayed in the NICU for 100 days, endured two brain surgeries in my first three months of life, was given a 5% chance of survival (and if I did survive, I would be blind, deaf, in a wheelchair, and have profound intellectual disabilities), and nearly died three times. 33 years later, I’d say I turned out pretty well and beat all the odds.
