Thanks to @njasl, @bibliobeth, and the whole #NJASL19 crew for letting me discuss- we now have our first NJ books posted to share! Here's hoping they're the first of many!

So grateful to those who came up to me at #NJASL19 to say hi and that they liked what I had to say on Twitter. Humbling to know some folks find some of my musings of interest or use in some small way!
Thank you all!
In addition to learning about how to create edu "Escape the Room" lessons, we actually worked in small groups to do five puzzles that showed off how you can create your own with $0 (if you have some tech and a photocopier). Great stuff from @GuiseGotTechEd @ #NJASL19 #edtech
THERE IS NO MULTI-TASKING (with few and rare exceptions). There is just task switching, which divides focus and prevents full engagement with either element. Studeis of the smartest & most capable folks on planet show multitaskers don't. @MarcusChildress #NJASL19 #echat #tlchat

Not much data that says constructivism enchances student learning; but a growing body of research says direct instruction does work. @marcuschildress

Analogy: You may prefer a certain food, but ti’s not necessarily what’s good for you. Same thing for “learning styles”... Analysis finds no (or negative) correlation btwn achievement and preferred "learning style".

Some reluctant readers are so because they've had a bad time from someone about what they want to read - we've got to stop literacy shaming! (Here's my PSA: #tlchat #edchat #literacy #NJASL19

Another reason some readers are reluctant: They're embarrassed by what they want to read, either because of content or level. Worried what others might think of them. If we can help them get the books w/out other knowing... #NJASL19 #tlchat #edchat @AuthorWilMara
A reminder from a discussion at #NJASL19 yesterday: Reading Levels are meant ONLY as a diagnostic tool for teachers. They're NOT prescriptive! Stop leveling every title in the library! Stop telling kids/parents their levels! Don't stop kids from reading what they want! #tlchat
He said it regarding football, but also a great point about the importance of diversity and inclusion when building library collections - need to represent topics and ethnicities of all sorts!
#NJASL19
Exposure matters - kids surrounded by books are able to pick up books. Kids without models and access aren't necessarily reluctant readers - they just don't know about being readers. (All of the above from @AuthorWilMara at #NJASL19)
To pull in "reluctant readers", focus on the CONTENT rather than the format; de-emphasize the "book" part and focus more on the "Hey, this is a topic you really like!" - Some great info from Will Mara at #NJASL19
"You can tell your story with love, or you can tell it with rage; or you can tell it after you work through the rage with love." @JackieWoodson at #NJASL19
"If you write it down, it's not a lie, it's fiction!" @JackieWoodson - self-confessed former inveterate liar, current award-winning author #NJASL19
My latest @aasl #KnowledgeQuest post went up while I'm listening to @JackieWoodson speak at #NJASL19 - is it a sign that my writing can touch an audience like she does? 😁

"The library can be the difference-maker in equity and access for students." - Dr Joseph Meloche, Supt of Cherry Hill Schools @MelocheJoe #NJASL19
"We didn't set out to be leaders. We just did the things we thought needed to be done, and kept stepping out of our comfort zone. So don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!" -@hildakw

Just occurred to me that when @MrSchuReads gave me a book yesterday, he recognized me as one of his former students, even though we'd never met in person, it's been over a year, and even though he must have hundreds of students... Just adds to his impressiveness! #njasl19
He's like if Mr. Rogers and Tigger the Tiger had a love-child who (deservedly and correctly) thought books were the most important thing in life! #NJASL19

“Graphic novels are cool, and cool is a motivating factor!” -Diane Oesau, #NJASL19
We want kids to be motivated about reading, so let's get out of their way and let them BE MOTIVATED as they grab graphic novels to explore!
Totally getting blown away by @historycomics 's #NJASL19 presentation on graphic novels and comics - so many great reasons why they should be a regular part of education! He spoke for an hour and was just getting warmed up...!
"The graphic novel of Sense and Sensibility made my daughter want to read the 'real' book." @historycomics #NJASL19
"It was comics that gave my son the interest and the ability to read." @historycomics #NJASL19
"The job of a librarian is to make hearts large through story." @MrSchuReads #NJASL19
"The job of the administration is to take care of the teachers' hearts." @MrSchuReads #NJASL19
"The job of the school librarian is to take care of students hearts." - @MrSchuReads #NJASL19
Woo hoo! Won a book from @MrSchuReads! And the dust jacket is a poster! Can't wait to hang it in my classroom! All ARE welcome! #NJASL19
