U.S. tsunami warning system, reeling from funding and staffing cuts, is dealt another blow Seismic monitoring stations in Alaska are closing after a denied federal grant, risking delayed tsunami warnings for people living on the West Coast.

This comes on top of low staffing at #US #TsunamiWarningCenters. Of 20 full-time positions at the #NTWC in #AK, only 11 are filled. At #PTWC in #HI, only 12 of 16 roles are filled.

Most people are probably unaware of how few staff actually work at the National and Pacific Tsunami Warning Centers. With very few staff, these scientists monitor in 24/7 shifts to keep our coastal areas safe. I guess the admin doesn’t consider them “public safety” roles. #NOAA #NTWC #PTWC
