An original Aladdin oil lamp. It's as bright as a 60 watt lightbulb, and doesn't stink like most lamps. I found it in an antique store, and had to get new wicks, chimneys and mantles, but now it's in prime operational condition.
Here's a picture of the mantle. I had to switch the camera to manual mode to adjust aperture and speed to get a decent shot. The Aladdin works on the same principle as a white gas lantern; heat makes the mesh mantle glow. The hotter the flame, the brighter the mesh. It doesn't get as bright as a gas lamp, and certainly not as much as an LED lamp, but it's a delight to have when the power is out.
#NYSEG had a major outage, which took down power for my provider, #DCEC, who takes very good care of their infrastructure.
But I don't mind, because I got to use my Aladdin lamp!
I do take pride in my storm and disaster preps, but having to actually use them reminds me it's not fun.

We in Central and Western NY State should protest #NYSEG & #RG&E for so many reasons! One is the amount of power outages. Second is the lack of keeping up with maintenance of the lines. Third for the increase in rates to supposedly keep up with the grid needs and reduce power outages!

Well after an amazingly long Indian Summer this year, the #weather gods finally dusted off their #snow machine and dumped a foot and a half of #winter on the #Catskill mountains. We lost power for about 24 hours. Kudos to #NYSEG for restoring service pretty fast despite all the drifting snow.
