SADC Tourism Alliance sets skills focus for Namibia Chamwe Kaira The newly elected steering committee of the SADC Tourism Alliance will focus on developing skills in Namibia’s tourism industry during its term. Tourism is Namibia’s fastest-growing economic sector, employing more than 100,000 people.  Tourist arrivals rose from 169 565 during the pandemic to 863 872 in 2023, according to the ministry of environment and tourism. The ministry was allocated N$797 million for the 2025/26 fiscal year. Regional tourism leaders have created a new governance structure to address barriers slowing the sector’s growth.  Intra-regional tourism accounts for less than 25% of arrivals, and air connectivity remains limited. The steering committee will work to unlock Southern Africa’s tourism potential. The SADC Tourism Alliance was established in 2022 as the private sector voice for tourism in all 16 SADC member states.  It brings together national tourism associations and businesses to strengthen cross-border cooperation.  Operating independently while engaging the SADC Secretariat, the alliance coordinates efforts to position Southern Africa as a connected tourism destination. The steering committee members are Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa (Chair), CEO of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, Tojo Lytah Razafimahefa (Deputy Chair), president of CTM Madagascar, Memory Momba Kamthunzi, executive director of the Malawi Tourism Council, Ally Karaerua, chair of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, Paul Matamisa, CEO of the Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe and Nasser Zauria Usta from the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique. “Each of us faces national challenges, whether it’s airlift in Malawi, skills development in Namibia, or infrastructure in Madagascar. But we’ve learnt that a tourist doesn’t see borders the way we do,” said Tshivhengwa.  “When we work together, we can unlock investment, create jobs, and protect our natural heritage at a scale that none of us can achieve alone. That’s not just good business; it’s essential for the communities who depend on tourism across our region.” The alliance aims to support the SADC Tourism Programme 2020-2030, which seeks to make Southern Africa a competitive, sustainable, and unified tourism destination.  At a strategic session, three priorities were identified: improving regional access, building a strong regional reputation, and ensuring institutional sustainability. In May, minister of environment and tourism Indileni Daniel said N$33 million will be spent on upgrading 214 km of tourist roads in Etosha and Namib-Naukluft parks.  Other allocations include N$4.48 million for park boundary fence maintenance and water facilities, N$42 million for renovations at ministry headquarters and regional offices, restoring water supply to Galton Gate, drilling a borehole in Mahango Park, and N$5.29 million for infrastructure at Etotha Carnival to improve hygiene and safety. New Zurich-Windhoek route to boost tourism and trade Hertta-Maria Amutenja Air Connect Namibia has announced the launch of a new nonstop flight route between Zurich and Windhoek, set to begin in June 2026. The route will operate twice weekly and will be serviced by Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure airline. “This is more than just a new flight, it’s a strategic bridge between Europe and Namibia. We are thrilled to welcome Edelweiss to Namibia. This connection elevates our country’s status as a global tourism and investment destination, and we are committed to ensuring the route’s long-term success,” said Bisey /Uirab, chief executive officer of the Namibia Airports Company and spokesperson for Air Connect Namibia. The flights will connect Zurich Airport with Hosea Kutako International Airport.  The route is expected to create new opportunities for Namibian businesses and the tourism sector. The initiative results from coordinated efforts between public and private stakeholders, including the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, Gondwana Collection, Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Namibia Tourism Board, and the City of Windhoek. Air Connect Namibia said Switzerland is one of Namibia’s fastest-growing European source markets.  In 2024, about 22,000 two-way international passengers travelled between Windhoek and Swiss destinations, a 7% increase from 2023. Zurich is a major European travel hub and offers broad access to other destinations across the continent.  The new route is aimed at serving both leisure and business travellers. Edelweiss’ entry into the Namibian market is expected to drive growth in sectors such as hospitality, accommodation, transport, and logistics.  It also supports Namibia’s image as a destination known for its natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism. Air Connect Namibia was established in 2024 as a partnership between the Namibia Airports Company and other public and private entities.  Its mandate is to improve air access by supporting airlines that fly into Namibia’s international airports. The Zurich-Windhoek route forms part of a broader plan to expand Namibia’s global connections and strengthen its position as a tourism and investment hub in Southern Africa.

SMEs urge community to come out at Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup Vendors at the Outjo Sport Stadium have called on tourists and the Outjo community to support their stalls at the ongoing Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup. On the opening day, the grounds were transformed into a vibrant space for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) selling various food and beverage items. On Friday vendors arrived to set up just before the games started, while also being the last to leave. Some vendors, however, felt that the day did not go as expected. Standing next to her kapana grill, Bianca Ilonga told The Namibian the day did not meet her expectations. “Yesterday didn’t go so great. I was a bit disappointed. . . I cooked more food than I should’ve. “I don’t know, maybe it’s because it was the first day and the start,” she says. Ilonga remains optimistic that Saturday would be better. “Yesterday was a bit different, but as days go on, it will change. We will see as days go on, maybe it will change. I’m hoping for better income,” she says. Three stalls away from her, Carolla Kavendji shared Ilonga’s sentiments, highlighting that her approach could have been different. “Yesterday was slow, just a small income, but we will try today again. Maybe we have to give people what they want and come to their level. Yesterday, we gave people something else, so we’ll go back to the basics,” Kavendji told The Namibian. Kavendji, however, thanked Nedbank and The Namibian for the opportunity to sell her goods. “We’re happy for the opportunity because every entrepreneur can now push their business,” she adds. For Christoline /Gawises, however, business was good. “The sales were very great. We didn’t expect it, but it went very good, and we expect the same today.” /Gawises says the tournament is a rare chance to tap into a larger market. “For us SMEs, this is a very good opportunity because we don’t have these events at Outjo often. So if we have something like this, it’s a very great opportunity to make a bit of money. So we’re grateful to The Namibian and Nedbank for this,” she notes. COMMUNITY BENEFITS /Gwasies, however, told The Namibian the opportunities the tournament brings along go beyond sports. “It’s a very great opportunity for the schools to have this tournament here. We saw the improvements with the renovations of the schools. This tournament also takes our children out of the street. It gives them a lot of motivation,” she adds. Kavendji also highlights the community benefits of the tournament. “I’m very happy for the stadium and school upgrades. . . It’s good for the children who don’t usually go with the regional teams to the Newspaper Cup, so now they know what it feels like,” she says. She also praises the tournament’s broader impact. From kapana to poitjie kos, the offerings at the Nedbank Newspaper Cup are both on and off the field.
