‘We will remember their names’ …Mariental accident victims remembered  Justicia Shipena  The nation remember lives lost in a tragic accident in a memorial service. This follows the death of 16 people in a head-on collision near Mariental on 30 August, including 14 officers from the Namibian Police Force and Namibia Correctional Service (NSC) and two civilian sisters, Diana Jagger and Roseltha Higoam.  Among the deceased were officers David Musambani, Naemi Shipena, Silvanus Hofeni, Simon Sinyemba, Alina Simeon, Petrus Mbuale, Adreheid Taapopi, Noa Hameho, Tomas Shikongo, Johannes Mbeeli, Jason Amadhila, Katjitombua Muheue, Mercia Louw, and Gerson Hepute. The crash happened in the early hours of Saturday and involved a Correctional Service van en route to the Hardap Correctional Facility and a Police Force vehicle transporting civilians to the Mariental State Hospital.  A mass memorial service was held at the Mariental sports field on Wednesday. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah led the nation in mourning, calling the accident a heavy cloud of grief hanging over Namibia.  “We gather here this morning as a nation in deep shock, with a sense of disbelief and profound sadness,” she said.  “We are not only standing in solidarity with the bereaved families, but we also walk this painful journey with you.”  She reminded citizens that Namibia had lost more than officers in uniform, noting they were also family members, breadwinners, and future leaders.  Nandi-Ndaitwah urged the public to take the tragedy as a reminder of the importance of road safety.  “Every life is precious, and every decision made when we are on our roads carries the possibility of profound consequences,” she said. She assured families that the government, together with the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA Fund), will provide all necessary support, including swift processing of death certificates, transport arrangements, counselling, and psychosocial support.  “We also cannot overlook the invisible wounds carried by those left behind. As we find ourselves under this dark cloud of shock, grief and sorrow, let us draw strength from our unity and resilience as one people, with One Heart and One Mind,” she added.  Hardap governor Riaan McNab told families that no words can undo the pain or fill the gap left by their loved ones.  Home affairs, safety and security minister Lucia Iipumbu said the late officers served with courage and devotion.  “We honour their sacrifices, and we will remember their names,” she said.  She urged the public to respect the memory of the deceased by refraining from sharing images that cause pain.  “Let’s choose compassion over curiosity and dignity over speculation.” NSC commissioner general Raphael Hamunyela also paid tribute to the late officers, calling their service and sacrifice unforgettable.  He urged Namibians to honour their legacy by upholding unity and compassion.  “Dear mourners, let us now channel our grief into support. Let us surround the bereaved families with our unwavering love, prayer, and practical assistance,” he said.

SA police convoy gets Nampol escort from Ariamsvlei to Swakopmund Hertta-Maria Amutenja The Namibian Police (Nampol) have confirmed that a South African delegation of police officials and public service employees began travelling through Namibia on 10 August 2025. Commissioner Johanna Ngondo told the Windhoek Observer yesterday her team is escorting the delegation from the Ariamsvlei border post to Windhoek.  From Windhoek, another police unit will take over the escort for the convoy’s onwards journey to Swakopmund. “The exact number of vehicles in the convoy has not been confirmed, but all vehicles will travel together,” Ngondo said. She added that no roads have been closed during the convoy’s passage, but motorists should expect slower traffic flow. “The time of day the convoy will be on the B1 and B2 roads has not been confirmed, as we are still finalising their entry arrangements,” Ngondo said. In a public notice issued last week, deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, Nampol spokesperson, warned motorists to prepare for congestion on the B1 from Keetmanshoop to Windhoek and the B2 between Windhoek and Swakopmund during the period of 10 to 15 August. “The delegation is expected to arrive in Namibia through the Ariamsvlei Border Post on Sunday, 10 August 2025, en route to Swakopmund via Windhoek on the same day in a convoy of nine buses,” Shikwambi said. She urged motorists to exercise patience due to the expected traffic delays during the convoy’s movement. The delegation is scheduled to depart Namibia on 15 August through the Buitepos border post via Gobabis, where motorists may also experience delays and have been advised to plan accordingly. Long-distance truck driver Peter Hamukwaya said delays caused by the convoy could affect delivery schedules. “We are paid to deliver goods on schedule. If we are delayed by the convoy, it affects not just us but the customers waiting on our deliveries,” she said.

Mystery of missing police officer deepens Niël Terblanché The Namibian Police (Nampol) are intensifying efforts to locate 52-year-old police officer George Hamanja Isaacks, who went missing in Walvis Bay last Friday under unclear circumstances. Isaacks, employed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, had travelled from Windhoek for official duties. Isaacks was last seen by his colleagues around 14:00 on Friday. Since then, there has been no contact with him. “His phone is not reachable, and family members, friends, and colleagues have not heard from him since,” said Inspector Judith Shomongula, Nampol’s Erongo Regional spokesperson. At the time of his disappearance, Isaacks was wearing khaki trousers, a shirt, a blue jean jacket, and a grey and white cap. He is described as light in complexion. A potential lead emerged when an unidentified man was seen entering the Atlantic Ocean near the Swakopmund aquarium around 20:00 on Saturday. Witnesses described the man, also light in complexion, walking along the beach before suddenly jumping into the sea. He was wearing a red T-shirt, blue trousers, a grey cap, and black sunglasses. The sunglasses were later found on a bench by the beach. Emergency services began search operations that evening. While police have not confirmed a link between Isaacks’ disappearance and the man seen at the beachfront, they are not ruling out the possibility. “Our assumptions should remain that he is still alive until any further discovery,” Shomongula said. The police are urging anyone with information or who may have a missing relative matching the description to come forward. People can contact Detective Chief Inspector Dino Skrywer at 081 422 3210, Detective Warrant Officer Epson Ronnie Gariseb at 081 203 1808, Detective Inspector Gail Kolele at 081 218 7336, or report to the nearest police station. Shomonula said that the investigation into the missing police officer, as well as the potential drowning incident, is still active.

Namibian Police set to recruit 2 000 new cadets The Namibian Police are set to recruit around 2 000 new cadets within the next two months. This was said by inspector general Joseph Shikongo on Friday during a community engagement at Adolf Location in the Ondangwa Rural constituency. According to Shikongo, this recruitment drive aims to boost the police’s commitment to enhancing safety and security across the nation and to improve service delivery to communities. He indicated that they also intend to recruit around 140 members from the Men and Women Network to join the next intake, an increase from the previous 70 recruits. “This network plays a crucial role in supporting us as law enforcement at the grassroots level, and it will be befitting to bring them into the system,” he said. Previously, the police enlisted about 70 network members aged between 18 and 45. Recognising the growing need for community involvement, Shikongo said that they intend to increase this intake to 10 members per region. Shikongo also mentioned the upcoming graduation ceremony for the current cohort of recruits, which is expected to take place this month. Addressing the deeply concerning issue of the recent murders of young children at Okahandja, Shikongo emphasised the vulnerability of children and the urgent need for their constant protection. He urged the public to actively participate in maintaining law and order by becoming community police officers and collectively combating social ills within their neighbourhoods and the wider country. [7:45 pm, 02/05/2025] +264 81 378 7281: At the same occasion, Oshana governor Elia Irimari called on the residents of Adolf Location to fight all social ills in the area. He acknowledged the recent tragic incidents in Okahandja, where young lives of future leaders were lost. He said the Okahandja incidents have deeply affected the entire nation, making it particularly relevant to connect with the community in Adolf Location. He expressed satisfaction at the large turnout of community members who were eager to discuss and address issues impacting their well-being during the engagement with the inspector general.
