He looks utterly baffled, but amiable. Fond. Ruan Lanzhu is not at all sure he could be clearer, actually. He doesn’t even know if there are words to articulate how he feels right now. Most of his feelings involve his teeth, or physically improbable impulses like merging their consciousnesses into one skin so they never have to be apart. He says nothing. But after a moment he realizes that he still hasn’t explained why he’s sitting in here in Ling Jiushi’s bedroom. He removes a small kaleidoscope from his breast pocket. “This is for you.” This is not a lie. It is for Ling Jiushi. All of them are. Gao Dawei put kaleidoscopes all over the game for Ling Jiushi to find, and since Ruan Lanzhu ended up with this one he wants to give it back to its rightful owner. But he can’t say that. There are so many things he can’t say. Feeling awkward, he sets the kaleidoscope on the side table and stands up, saying, “Some people are naturally suited for the doors.” This is another half truth. He’s being confusing, he knows. Nothing he’s said here makes any sense. It would have been better to say nothing. Realizing there’s absolutely nothing he can do to salvage the conversation and make it feel like a normal interaction, he leaves, staunchly ignoring the dozens of questions in Ling Jiushi’s soft, warm eyes. He clenches his jaw to maintain his neutral expression when their hands brush as he walks past. A shiver runs up his arm at the fleeting contact. This is becoming a problem.
