Given the difference in recovery rates between Illumina and Nanopore, and how much diversity Illumina simply cannot recover, our conclusion at this stage is that @nanoporetech.com sequencing is probably the only platform that makes sense to use for seawater metagenomics.

The fewer extra things ONT attempts to develop themselves, the better they can get at developing and improving their core sequencing tech.
