County explores partnership with International Youth Fellowship to empower youth The County Government of Narok, through its Department of Youth Affairs, is exploring a partnership with the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) to introduce transformative youth programmes aimed at tackling key challenges faced by young people in the county. Speaking at a County Youth Stakeholders Forum, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth, Robert Simotwo, emphasised the importance of collective action in empowering youth. He noted the existing gaps in youth initiatives and called for coordinated efforts to equip young people with the necessary skills and opportunities to thrive. “We must come together as partners, stakeholders, and leaders to ensure that our young people are not left behind. Empowering them with the right skills and opportunities is crucial to building a prosperous society,” said Simotwo. The Chief Officer for Youth Affairs, Pesi Ntari, echoed Simotwo’s sentiments, stressing the significance of the collaboration with IYF. She reiterated the county government’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of IYF programmes, expressing confidence in the potential impact on Narok’s youth. “We are committed to working closely with the International Youth Fellowship to ensure that our youth can access these life-changing programmes. Together, we will create pathways for personal and professional development,” affirmed Ntari. County IYF Director, Pastor John Mucheru, outlined the core initiatives that IYF aims to introduce in Narok. These include a free weekend academy, which offers basic soft skills training through short courses, job creation initiatives and opportunities to connect youth with potential employers. Mucheru also cited the significance of IYF’s flagship Mind Education programme, which focuses on rehabilitating former prisoners and equipping them to serve as chaplains within Kenyan prisons. “Our goal is to instill a positive mindset and equip young people with practical skills that will transform their lives. Through this partnership, we aim to empower the youth of Narok County with the tools they need to succeed,” said Pastor Mucheru. The proposed partnership between the County Government of Narok and IYF aims to deliver a structured and meaningful approach to youth empowerment, focusing on both personal development and career growth opportunities. **By Lamech Willy.A** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Relief for wheat farmers It’s a big relief for the wheat farmers in Narok County after the Ministry of Agriculture moved to mop up all the wheat to create room for the next harvest. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Agriculture and Food Authority, Dr. Bruno Linyiru instructed all farmers with wheat in their homes to deliver the produce to the nearest National and Cereal Produce Board (NCPB) as they await their payment in less than 30 days. Dr. Linyiru spoke at the Narok town NCPB, where he noted that already the depot had received 1200 bags and 12 trunks were on the queue to deliver the produce. He was accompanied by the Cereal Growers Association’s (CGA) chairman, Antony Kioko and farmers’ representatives from Narok County. “The wheat that is uncollected is about 321, 000 bags which we expect to be collected soon because we have the capacity. We are happy because the intake process is flowing smoothly,” reiterated the CEO. He lauded the government program to sell farmers subsidized fertilizer, saying the initiative has increased wheat harvest from 1.7 million bags in 2023 to 1.9 million bags in 2024. “We are looking to reduce the importation of wheat, as what we currently produce locally is only 8 percent of what is consumed. This means we import 92 percent of wheat from other countries,” he said. Kioko thanked the government for yielding to their cry and urged all farmers to deliver their wheat to the nearest NCPB depot. “We have been working on a program where whatever small we produce is taken up before we import any wheat from outside. I believe this will sort out our issues,” said Kioko. Narok CGA chairman Stanely Koonyo said storage was their major challenge that pushed farmers to hold demonstrations so as to air their complaints. He asked farmers to respect the decision made by the department of agriculture and avail their produce at NCPB, where it will be collected by the millers. The move comes a few days after Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe directed farmers and aggregators to deliver their stock to NCPB after the Board and millers signed a memorandum of understanding. **By Ann Salaton** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Narok residents warned against blocking major highways during protest Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia has warned the Maa community against blocking major highways to express their dissatisfaction on any issue affecting society. Lotiatia asked the residents to use legal paths or any other amicable manner to resolve their differences instead of interfering with critical infrastructure like roads that link people from different backgrounds to their destinations. He spoke today at Sekenani Gate, at the Maasai Mara National Reserve where irate youth barricaded the highway protesting the court’s decision to hand over 4720 acres of Maasai Mara National Reserve to a brother of Narok Governor Livingstone Kunini Ntutu. Similar demonstrations were witnessed at Talek trading center where residents burned tires along the road as a way of demanding their land back. Two people were injured in the mayhem. Lotiatia, who was accompanied by members of the county security team, told the residents that though it was their right to oppose the ruling, they should use the legal means to make an appeal instead of barricading the busy highway. The county commissioner assured tourists visiting the Maasai Mara National Reserve that the area is safe as there were enough security personnel deployed to calm the chaos witnessed. This comes at a time when the county government of Narok has appealed the court’s decision in the Court of Appeal of Kenya. The county’s attorney, Allan Meng’ati said they had studied the judgement and made a decision to make an appeal on the entire document. “We respect the decision of the court but we do not agree with it; that is why we have appealed the judgement,” he said. A senior advocate, Martin Kamwaro, said the community will exploit all legal paths to ensure the land is constitutionally and legally owned by the community. The land under dispute is one of the prime areas of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, as it is deemed to be the breeding ground of lions and cheetahs. **By Ann Salaton and Mishmar Neymah** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Empowerment call as Kenya marks Women’s Day This year’s International Women’s Day in Narok County was marked by a powerful call for economic empowerment to transform the lives of women and girls. Women from marginalized communities continue to face significant obstacles, including early marriages, female genital mutilation resulting in health complications such as fistula, and the neglect of girls’ education, which have hindered their social and economic progress. At Ole-ntimama Stadium, hundreds of women gathered to commemorate the day. During the event, Agnes Ntutu, wife to Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, stressed the importance of women’s empowerment and inclusion. “I have urged women to have a voice in society because when we are included, the entire community is represented. We must take up leadership positions, educate ourselves, and support each other. I have organised meetings to teach women about leadership, personal hygiene, and the importance of maintaining our surroundings. Our environment reflects who we are,” she explained. Ms. Ntutu also encouraged women to join Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs), emphasising that financial independence is essential to breaking the cycle of poverty. “By saving money, accessing loans, and investing in their own businesses through SACCOs, women can strengthen their economic status and create sustainable livelihoods,” she stressed. **Agnes Ntutu, wife of Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, presents certificates to cooperative societies under the Ushanga initiative at the International Women’s Day celebration at Olentimama Stadium.** Director of the Ushanga Initiative, Rebecca Senoi, a platform designed to create jobs and improve the living standards of pastoralist women through the commercialisation of beadwork, highlighted the transformative potential of the project. “We have trained women and acted as a bridge to market access. We also supply them with the necessary materials to create beads, empowering them economically. Most importantly, this initiative is teaching them to see beadwork as a viable source of livelihood,” Senoi stated. She further noted that the initiative has spurred the formation of cooperatives, with 21 societies already active in Narok County. “These cooperatives have fostered unity among women and boosted their economic prospects through collective activities such as table banking,” she added. The Ushanga Initiative aims to strengthen the business and production capacity of women and youth while enhancing the competitiveness of bead products in local, regional, and international markets. By encouraging the formation of cooperatives, the initiative enables women to collaborate efficiently, protects the intellectual property of communities practicing beadwork, and preserves their cultural heritage by establishing direct channels with buyers and monitoring for any illegal activities. Anchored in the belief that economic empowerment is key to sustainable development, the Ushanga model mobilises women into organised cooperative groups, provides essential production infrastructure, and facilitates market access through innovative designs, advanced beading techniques, refined product finishing, and strategic marketing. Senoi views the initiative as the sole bargaining tool available for marginalised women, given that most economic opportunities are controlled by men in their culture. In a male-dominated society like Narok County, where calls for women’s inclusion in leadership and economic empowerment are gaining momentum, women continue to face pervasive discrimination. They remain at a higher risk of poverty and have limited negotiating power and access to essential resources. **By Lamech Willy.A and Vivian Stacy** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

State to support conservancies following withdrawal of USAID funding The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, has underscored the big role conservancies play to boost the country’s economy, reiterating that the government will pump more money to support them. Ms. Miano observed the conservancies had been affected by the change of policies internationally, stating the government will move in to support the conservation efforts in the conservancies. “In the current budget, we are making proposals to support the conservancies that have been affected by changes of policies internationally,” she said. Speaking at the Wildlife Tourism College of Maasai Mara, where she attended the first graduation of the college, the CS underscored that human-wild conflict is one of the priorities for the current administration. Conservation is critical in preventing human-wild conflicts, and conservancies have played a big role. The State Department of Wildlife continues to support the conservancies through infrastructure and giving water, she said. The CS observed that tourism has contributed tremendously to the country’s economy, saying that in 2024, the country received about 2.4 million foreign tourists, which was an increase of 16 percent compared to the previous year. The department projects to receive over 3 million international tourists in 2025 and over 5 million domestic tourists. Miano praised Narok County for the conservation efforts, saying the county is a role model of how a county can manage a national reserve, participate in tourism, and make a significant mark in the country. “I encourage all counties with national reserves to work with us so as to get our support to operationalize the national reserves,” reiterated the CS. Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu, who accompanied the CS, decried that the county was heavily affected by the international policy to withdraw USAID funding, saying they have lost Sh. 838.5 million that was being pumped to the conservancies to boost conservation efforts. “We have to see how we will deal with this big gap. When making the June budget, please, madam CS, help us as we sort out this USAID issue. It is a big loss to our nation,” he reiterated. Governor Ntutu noted that the conservancies act as buffer zones for the wildlife that looms from the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The governor condoled with families that had lost their beloved ones through wild animals and called on the State Department of Wildlife to fast-track the compensations. Daniel Sopia, the Chief Executive Officer of the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association, said the main economic activity for the conservancies is to take care of wild animals and domestic animals. He revealed that there were 24 conservancies owned by 17, 000 landowners who get Sh. 100 million monthly on their land lease payment. During the event, 40 students graduated in various cadres, among them tour guiding & operations, food and beverage, housekeeping and laundry operations, and catering and hotel supervision. The ceremony was led by the institute chair of the board of trustees, Professor James Ole Kiyiapi, and the institute principal, Moriaso Nabaala. **By Ann Salaton** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail
