On #NationalSeniorsDay, let's celebrate the seniors in Kitchener-Conestoga and across Canada who have given so much.
They’ve raised families, founded businesses, taught us lessons, and so much more.
Today and every day let’s give them the love and support they deserve - they certainly deserve it!

By 2050, nearly 2 billion people will be 60 years or older. With migration on the rise, the question is: Are we ready to support equitable aging for older migrants? But first, what is equitable aging? “The ability of older migrants to age with dignity, access to culturally appropriate care and the opportunity to thrive regardless of their migration history, language or socioeconomic status.”
Aging migrants often face intersecting barriers: - Language difficulties - Limited healthcare access - Cultural misunderstandings - Systemic discrimination For those with precarious legal status or from marginalized groups, the situation is more complex: - Limited access to culturally appropriate care - Economic insecurity - Social exclusion
There is still much to learn about equitable aging in the context of migration. Researchers, however, have found four components that can help achieve health equity: Accessible and inclusive services Example: addressing key aging needs such as cognitive and mental health. Supportive aging policies Example: legal protection in the form of citizenship status. Familiarity with the host country’s healthcare system Example: culturally tailored education on disease prevention. Community engagement initiatives Example: mentorship from community leaders.
Interested in diving deeper into how equitable aging can support aging migrants? Read the new Open Access article!
Today is #NationalSeniorsDay, a moment to celebrate older adults in Canada. As migration continues shaping our communities, we are urged to consider how our systems could better support older migrants and seniors. Learn more: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
