A postal first day cover, issued by the Republic of Palau in 1984 to celebrate the Chambered Nautilus (Nautilus pompilius). The white envelope carries a large colour illustration on the left side showing a Nautilus swimming (left to right) close to the sea bed, with a growth of marine algae in the background. The image is captioned with, "This living fossil has fascinated artists and scientists for years because of its grace and beauty and its architectural perfection. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE" On the upper right of the envelope, a single small stamp (28 cent-value) shows a Chambered Nautilus swimming right to left over the sea bed. A stamped cancellation reads: KOROR PALAU FEB 22 1984 96940 FIRST DAY OF ISSUE
A set of five postal stamps issued by Republic of Palau Postal Services in 1988. The stamps (each with a marked value of "25") are set in the middle row of a perforated panel, with a header strip bearing a verse by Oliver Wendell Holmes entitled, "The Chambered Nautilus". The verse is flanked on the left by a painting of an empty Nautilus shell and on the right by painting of a living Nautilus. Beneath this, the stamp in the upper left shows a sectioned Nautilus shell with a fossil ammonite shell for comparison. In the lower left, the stamp bears illustrations of the shell exterior of five described extant species of Nautilus. The central stamp bears three stylized Palauan bai symbols for Nautilus in the form of comma-shaped spirals. The stamp in the upper right depicts six captured (for study) specimens of Nautilus belauensis, with a seventh animal outside the cage on the sea floor. The lower right stamp shows a captured and tagged animal being released from human hands. The bottom panel strip reads, "Palau's Chambered Nautilus - Nautilus belauensis - flanked by the three Palauan bai symbols on each side.
