So our 3 day tour of #CambridgeshireBirding & #LincolnshireBirding started @rspb.bsky.social #NeneWashes with Long eared owl & Cranes then Ring necked duck #DeepingLakes #UKBirding
A great days fenbirding. 000s of wildfowl and waders on #NeneWashes (March Farmers is ace), Glossy Ibis, 54 Cranes, 5 Great Egrets (off the washes feeding in dykes between Pondersbridge and Coates), 27 Little Egrets into roost, 11 Marsh Harriers and a couple of Peregrines.
One of 12 Great Egrets (my previous day best here was only 3) seen along the #NeneWashes this afternoon. Also or Garganey (Dog in a Doublet) and a SP Grey Plover (Eldernell) #rbncam @CambsBirdClub
Magnifying glass out! White-tailed Eagle at trigg point west of March Farmers #NeneWashes this morning (taken just with iPhone) for 5 mins before heading off high SW at 1135. The other two birds are Red Kite and Common Buzzard. #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
The perfect Sunday. GreT birding at the #NeneWashes. Gardening in a sunny spring garden with buzzy bees and spring birds song. Liverpool losing at home 😜 and then beating city rivals, again, at their place 👏🏼 If only all Sundays could be like today.
Took along the #NeneWashes this pm. Still wall to wall water but around 2m lower than peak flood height. But a long way to go yet. Few birds on or over the water but fab views of a female Hen Harrier hunting the south barrier bank at March Farmers.
Found this Red Kite #skull on the #NeneWashes this morning. Similar to Marsh Harrier in length, lower bulge at rear of skull and lower mandible, but prominent eyebrow, less sloping forehead and heavier bill with very obvious gaps point to RK to me. #wildlife #nature
Wow! It’s still May and the banks at Eldernell #NeneWashes are parched and tinder dry in places. At least Mortem’s Leam is looking sparklingly clear and loads of Scarce Chasers (mist I’ve ever seen here - they are having a good year) along the section to the east of the car park
March Farmers #NeneWashes to 0845: expected species plus 1 Turnstone and 2 Ringed Plover #rbncam @CambsBirdClub
With his 2nd appearance in my home #wildlifeart thread, @leicester_llama’s Common Cranes. Cranes are special to those of us who watch the #NeneWashes and as soon as Andy tweeted this I made sure I got #1 of his series of 5 😁 Note the frame and mount complementing the birds #art
... Corncrake! At RSPB Nene Washes. What a thrill. One of the previously reintroduced population.

RSPB Nene Washes, heaving with breeding birds. But not a tranquil place at this time of year; impossible to stand still for a minute without some Lapwing, Black-tailed Godwit or Redshank pair making it very clear you're not welcome. #MyWalk #NeneWashes #OurWorldIsWorthSaving 1/3
Baikal Teal still present west of Marsh Farmers #NeneWashes #rbncam @CambsBirdClub
Baikal Teal still present at March Farmers #NeneWashes at 1840. Still just west of power lines at back of wash towards the river bank #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
Baikal Teal March Farmers #NeneWashes (just west of the power lines west of the car park) to c.8.30pm when lost from view. Believed to have roosted with a Wigeon just out of sight. Bird always with a Male Wigeon and towards back of the wash. #rbnCAM
I don’t get many area ticks these days, so a Wood Warbler at Eldernell at #NeneWashes this morning, found by Andrew Gardner, was a real welcome treat (and 20 years in the waiting!). Present in willows by Eldernell Pit up to 1115h at least #rbnCAM
I spent a great afternoon yesterday out with the #NeneWashes @projectgodwit team - Hannah, Helen, Nat and @drredshank. Loads of godwit activity but sadly no new nests located. Hope they have better luck today #waders #shorebirds #WomenInScience #WomenInSTEM #womeninconservation
#TheFens are home to two huge washlands #OuseWashes and #NeneWashes two linear floodplains to stop towns to the west from flooding. They provide important wetland habitats through the year from summer breeding waders to wintering wildfowl and other #wildlife #WorldWetlandsDay
One of the two Cattle Egrets west of March Farmers #NeneWashes (on polls c. Halfway to trig point) this evening #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
3 Great Egrets #NeneWashes March Farmers from trig point (west of car park) this morning (Dave Nurney) #rbnCAM
13 Avocets in two groups at #NeneWashes east of Eldernell car park and west of March Farmers car park #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub (per Dave Nurney)
@WeedonsWorld reports still no sign of the Purple Heron, but 5 Avocet on wash opposite the trig point between March Farmers and Eldernell #NeneWashes #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
No sign of PURPLE HERON #NeneWashes March Farmers up to 7pm. 1 Cattle Egret and a second Great Egret #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
PURPLE HERON #NeneWashes this afternoon c.250m west of March Farmers car park with other herons and egrets at back of wash #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub (per Ian Gordon, per @WeedonsWorld / Peterbirder)
#NeneWashes 2 Cattle, 1 Great and 39 Little Egrets this evening all within 500m walk west of March Farmers car park, all at back of washes up by the river bank.
1 Avocet, 9 Ringed Plover and 3 Dunlin on the Decoy Wood pool at Eldernell.
#rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
Cattle Egret feeding with Little Egrets on #nenewashes c400m west of trig point at March Farmers (per @WeedonsWorld per @GrafhamWBirder/Cambirds) #rbncam @CambsBirdClub
March Farmers #NeneWashes c.1 mile east of car park on last weeks wader areas, not a single wader of note 😕 2 Egyptian Geese, 2 Barnacle Geese, 7 Wigeon #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
9 species of dragonfly at March Farmers #NeneWashes this morning inc site firsts for me, Scarce Chaser and Variable Damsel. Many hundreds of Large Red-eyed Damsels in just a single mile stretch of Mortem’s Lean. Higher density I’ve ever seen anywhere!
#NeneWashes c1 mile east of March Farmers car park: 1 Turnstone, 2 Grey Plover, 4 Greenshank, 1 Wood Sand. Marsh area beyond the corral and all birds on Marsh nearest the Nene river bank. So all very distant! #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
This morning c1.5 miles east of March Farmers #NeneWashes 2 grey plover, 7 greenshank, 2 ringed plover, 1 turnstone, 2 dunlin. Birds distant and in and out of cover (Steve Gann). Nothing of note at Eldernell (no sign of the Stilt) #rbnCAM @CambsBirdClub
