SARCOPHAGUS WITH CLIPEUS AND MARINE THIASOS, C. 230-250 CE. CORSO VITTORIO EMANUELE II

Though the courtyard where it is displayed is run down and the fountain of which it is the basin is turned off, this sarcophagus is a high-quality work. In the corridor leading from the busy late-C19/early-C20 artery of corso Vittorio to the courtyard, fragments of ancient carving including a huge acanthus frieze are on the walls, clearly spoils found when digging the building's foundations. Whether or not this was found at the same time, the builder of this palazzo was fortunate to obtain this sarcophagus, as it's both very finely carved and quite intact. At centre is a clipeus with a portrait of the deceased, a severe middle-aged man with hair cropped like a soldier's. On either side, a festive marine procession or thiasos is taking place, almost symmetrically. Two marine centaurs are holding up the clipeus, and riding on their backs are Nereids with velificationes (billowing draperies indicating divine nature). Two Erotes are riding cute dolphins (for a change!). Further out, two more marine centaurs have child musicians riding them.

A surprisingly splendid piece for #SarcophagusSaturday this week: a white marble #sarcophagus from the troubled #Rome of the third century CE, where frolicking #dolphins, #Nereids, and marine #centaurs help bring a man cross the seas to the Isles of the Blessed.
