For the future #NewAthena mission, the #XIFU instrument uses detectors cooled close to absolute zero (−273°C) to detect X-ray photons. Researchers at SRON developed a new method to calibrate thermometers at these ultra-low temperatures, improving measurement accuracy.

Nel frattempo, i 1.130 membri della comunità scientifica di NewAthena hanno iniziato a preparare lo studio di caso scientifico della missione.

La missione #NewAthena è in tabella di marcia per essere adottata all'inizio del 2027, dopodiché potrà iniziare la sua costruzione.

Il lancio della missione è previsto per il 2037 su un 🚀 Ariane 6.4.

The #NewAthena mission is on track for adoption in early 2027, after which construction can begin.

Meanwhile, the 1130 members of the NewAthena science community have started preparing the mission's science case.

The mission is planned to launch in 2037 on an Ariane 6.4.

#NewAthena will be able to rapidly respond to unexpected events occurring anywhere in the sky. 

The spacecraft will be able to follow-up on transient sources, such as those associated with neutrino events and gravitational waves, where it can work in tandem with the #LISA mission.

🪸 How and why does ordinary matter assemble into the structures that we see today? 

🕳️ How do black holes grow and shape their environment? 

🌀 How do galaxies hosting black holes evolve over time?
