Born in Egypt, brought to New York City in 1914. Artist who worked as a WPA muralist in the 1930s, compassionately portrayed the poor in his own paintings, but later adopted a much more abstract style. There are elements of precisionism, surrealism, geometric abstraction, regionalism, and social realism in his work. Precisionism was an American modernist art movement in the early 20th century that depicted the industrial and urban landscape with clean lines, sharp focus, and geometric forms, celebrating the machine age. Artists reduced subjects to their essential shapes, used a smooth finish, and often eliminated human presence to highlight the beauty of architecture and industry. Influenced by European movements like Cubism and Futurism, Precisionists created a style also known as "Cubist-Realism" or "Immaculism," reflecting America's technological and social changes during the 1920s and 30s.
