Vital Records Advocacy Update On January 13, 2026, New York Governor Hochul delivered her 2026 State of the State address and released an accompanying policy handbook, which includes the item "Improving Vital Records Access" on page 132. It says that Governor Hochul intends to make overdue technological improvements to the vital records system, launching an effort to digitize archival records for genealogical requests and converting historical birth, death, and marriage certificates into electronic, searchable formats as a means to address the current two-year backlog of more 12,000 genealogical records requests. The NYG&B is heartened to see that the Governor is taking this issue under consideration, and we stand ready to work with New York State and other partners on meaningfully solving this problem. We will continue to monitor the situation closely as it evolves and share next steps and updates with our community as they arise.

1890 NYC Police Census entry for 565 37th Manhattan, including Kate Nelis
Index for the 1890 NYC Police Census showing name and address
Description of the 1890 NYC Police Census 1890 New York City Police Census This collection contains the 1890 police census records from New York City. Records typically include names, birth year, relatives in the household and residence information. Additional details can be found on each record’s associated image. Following the 1890 federal census, New York City officials argued that the count was inaccurate. To correct this, city policemen conducted an independent enumeration of the 24 assembly districts between September 19th and October 14th. This police census ultimately identified 13% more residents than the federal government's initial tally. The records were extracted from the scanned lists using advanced AI technology developed by MyHeritage. Due to the use of artificial intelligence in extracting this information, some records may contain inaccuracies. It is recommended to review the associated images to verify the details.
