Not to be confused with “Sturgeon vs GAR” from this amusing throwback #NichollsFish thread 😂
Thank you for all the comments and kind words!
We will certainly miss our @NichollsState family and friends, and are grateful for our time in Louisiana. I definitely choked up a bit thanking my #NichollsFish students today for being a great last class ❤️🥹
Today’s Gulf Seafood Selection for #NichollsFish Lab!🐠🐟🐡
Potluck— I mean Practical Day for #NichollsFish Lab! 🐟🐠🐡🦈🧐
WAIT. CARP have TEETH???!!!
It’s true. Common Carp (and many other fishes) may lack teeth in their mouth, but have pharyngeal teeth in their throat!
These molar-like teeth help crush food items and move food into the gut tract🦷🍽️🐟 #NichollsFish
My #NichollsFish students also got to check out a couple juvenile Alligator Gar!
Seeing two gar species (and genera) in the same field day helped demonstrate more fine-scale (ha, scale) differences between similar fishes 🐟🧐👍
Longear Sunfish (from the same small campus ditch) were also showing off their colors! #NichollsFish
*fish safely released👍
We caught a lot of interesting fishes, but the surprise Spotted Gar was by far the #NichollsFish students’ favorite!
Loved seeing their enthusiasm for this local native species! Safely released👍
Y’ALL WE CAUGHT A GAR ON CAMPUS TODAY!!!
I don’t know who was more excited, #NichollsFish students or the prof! First time we’ve ever found a gar right on campus🐟👍
GARgantuan thank you @ingo_braasch @DrewT1023 for guest lecturing on gar & bowfin genomics and adaptations in killifishes for our #NichollsFish class today! Students (and Prof) learned a lot!
This band is called “Three Sharks and a Ratfish” #NichollsFish🦈🎸🥁🎺
Serving up pancakes in a light ethanol syrup for today’s #NichollsFish lab🦈🥞👍
Those TEETH though…and the fish slime 🦈 #NichollsFish
I’m so used to gar teeth being clearly visible, it was interesting to see Bull Shark’s infamous dentition so well-concealed🦷🧐
What were they* eating? Gulf Menhaden (aka Pogies)!
Stomach content samples will be used alongside stable isotope analysis and some genetics work to better understand food webs and species diversity🐟🦈👍 #NichollsFish
*the Bull Sharks, not the students/prof
Students did a great job with today’s Bull Shark🦈 dissections!
I’ve never worked with this species before, but I will say they were easier to dissect than gars! #NichollsFish
Our #NichollsFish students were excited to get a closer look at juvenile Bull Sharks for our dissection lab today!
VERY excited for today’s #NichollsFish lab dissections! Thanks @elmyers20 for the juvenile Bull Shark specimens!
Are we getting closer, or farther away from our target group of animals? 🤔 #NichollsFish
*if someone has an ID on this please let me know, SE Louisiana, found in narrow ditch.
Hmmmm 🐢 #NichollsFish
Ditch sampling with dip-nets for #NichollsFish class today, here are some members of the supporting cast:
Releasing a MONSTER 5-foot Longnose Gar with our #NichollsFish class! https://t.co/i5LqAibHzc
Nice Louisiana fish diversity (randomly selected by the students) for our first #NichollsFish lab!
@NichollsBiology students sketched general characteristics to help identify species🐟🧐👍
Surprised to see that even baby Mullet are business in the front and party in the back…if you can keep up with them! #GarLab #NichollsFish
From “megafish” to “megalotis”
Our #NichollsFish class caught (and released) several other fish species, including some nice Longear Sunfish (Lepomis megalotis)!
Release the beast! Our #NichollsFish class releases a giant 5-foot Longnose Gar! #GarLab

Many thanks @DrCBonvillain for running the boat AND helping land this beast; likely a state record fish (if caught under rod & reel methods)! #NichollsFish
MONSTER LONGNOSE GAR!!!
5 feet long, ~30 pounds; largest I’ve ever encountered!
Our #NichollsFish class caught (and released) this gargantuan Longnose Gar during our electrofishing field trip across from @NichollsState campus! Students (and prof) went wild!
