Lestat hangs playfully from the branches of a sturdy old apple tree from his family's orchard, which he cares about and tends to, holding an apple to Nicolas, who's willing to pause from his playing to eat. Nicolas hands aren't free, in one he holds his bowstring, in the other he supports his violin, still pressed to his shoulder, where his long curly hair cushions it. His mouth is open, as he splits a bite of the apple and holds it between his teeth, his eyes closed to savor it. Their bodies reversed, in the painting, is a visual metaphor for their opposite beliefs about the world, and also their sexual intimacy.
