🌏 Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica)

The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica), also known as the Nicobar dove, is a large, stocky bird, about 40 cm long, with a dark grey body and iridescent green and copper plumage. It has a distinctive mane of long neck feathers and a short, bright white tail. Females are slightly smaller with duller plumage. Juveniles are dark brown without the neck hackles and white tail. Found on small islands and coastal regions from the Nicobar Islands east to the Solomons and Palau, they are nomadic, flying between islands in flocks of up to 85 to forage for seeds, fruit, and invertebrates on the ground. They roost and breed on uninhabited islands, building simple twig nests in trees and laying one bluish-white egg. Their call is a deep cooing. Two subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)
