I like to take pictures of trees with both sun and shadow. It’s amazing to me how much light manages to filter to a forest floor, which seems like it should be completely dark. After all, not much grows on the leaf-covered ground.

The forest is always in a state of dying & growth. On a recent hike, I saw many trees that had been uprooted in storms. Others were beginning to grow, so I suppose there’s a type of equilibrium there. But it's still sad to see a fallen tree.
