Am 18. Mai 2025 hat sich Rumänien in einer richtungsweisenden Stichwahl für den proeuropäischen Kandidaten Nicusor Dan entschieden. Der parteilose Bürgermeister von Bukarest setzte sich mit 53,6 % der Stimmen gegen den ultranationalistischen George Simion durch, der 46,4 % erreichte. Die Wahlbeteiligung lag bei bemerkenswerten 65 %, dem höchsten Wert seit 25 Jahren, und spiegelte die hohe Mobilisierung der Wähler wider. Dans Wahlerfolg wird als klare Absage an rechtsextreme und prorussische Ausrichtungen gewertet. Sein Kontrahent Simion, Vorsitzender der nationalistischen AUR-Partei, hatte sich offen gegen die EU positioniert, die Unterstützung der Ukraine infrage gestellt und war mit dem wegen prorussischer Aktivitäten disqualifizierten Kandidaten Calin Georgescu verbündet. Internationale Reaktionen fielen entsprechend positiv aus: EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen, Frankreichs Präsident Emmanuel Macron sowie der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj gratulierten Dan und werteten seinen Sieg als Bekenntnis Rumäniens zu Demokratie, Rechtsstaatlichkeit und europäischer Integration. Nicusor Dan, 55 Jahre alt, ist Mathematiker und Bürgerrechtsaktivist. Er gründete 2006 die Initiative „Rettet Bukarest“, aus der später die Partei USR hervorging. Seit 2020 ist er Bürgermeister der Hauptstadt. Dan gilt als pragmatischer Reformer mit klarem Fokus auf Korruptionsbekämpfung, Infrastrukturentwicklung und einer prowestlichen Außenpolitik. Nach dem Rücktritt von Premierminister Marcel Ciolacu im Mai 2025 steht Dan vor der Aufgabe, eine neue Regierung zu bilden. Dabei muss er eine stabile Mehrheit im Parlament finden, ohne die nationalistische AUR einzubeziehen. Zudem gilt es, das Haushaltsdefizit zu reduzieren und das Vertrauen der Bevölkerung in die Institutionen zu stärken. Dans Wahlsieg markiert einen Wendepunkt für Rumänien, weg von autoritären Versuchungen, hin zu einem klaren Bekenntnis zu Europa und demokratischen Werten.
