Text: We write as a group of *women in Indian Publishing to oppose the amendments to the Transgender Rights Bill of 2019*, that is, the Transgender Persons (Protection Rights) Amendment Bill 2026, proposed by the government. The propose amendments *seriously violate the rights of trans people* and *do away with many of the positive provisions* and protections afforded by the decision of the Supreme Court in NALSA vs Union of India 2014

#NoGoingBack: Mumbai LGBTQIA+ Collective Condemns Transgender Amendment Bill 2026 Mumbai, 23 March, 2026 – Transgender, Intersex, gender diverse, and LGBQA+ individuals, collectives, and their allies - parents, healthcare professionals, and organizations from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane protest the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill 2026. This regressive bill violates the 2014 NALSA judgment on self-determination, imposes medical gatekeeping, excludes all non socio-cultural transgender identities, and risks criminalizing supporters via vague Section 18 changes, thus reviving stigma and conversion therapy threats. This further compounds the alienation faced by vulnerable transgender communities, barely getting by as is, especially those at the intersection of additional biases like caste, class, religion etc.

*Demands:* - We call on lawmakers to withdraw this amendment and uphold the constitutional rights, dignity, and autonomy of transgender persons in India. - In any amendment, we urge the government to retain the definition of “transgender person” used in the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which reflects both constitutional principles and international human rights standards. - We demand the preservation of our constitutional dignity, our right to privacy, and our rightful inclusion in the democratic process.
