Brooks hits the nail on the head. Although | was much more sympathetic
with Occupy than he (Tucson, where | lived, had the longest lasting
encampment), | agree that what both lack is a vision for what comes
next. Towards the middle of the Occupy movement, Noam Chomsky
spoke at the University of Arizona. After his talk, people lined up to ask
questions. An Occupy participant thanked him for his "support", which he
hadn't explicitly given, and then asked what they should worry about
coming from the government. Chomsky, in classic fashion, did not
directly address the question. Rather, he complimented Occupy on what
they had accomplished, exposing the failings of capitalism and Wall
Street and the inequalities that they perpetuated. Then he hit them with
the truth bomb. "Now you have to decide what to do next," he said. "You
have achieved your goals. Now you have to set new ones, and make a
plan going forward." (I paraphrase.) This is my issue with so many on the
left (and, it appears, on the right) who advocate "tearing it all down”
because it is broken. They have no plan whatsoever for what comes next.
From visionless revolution, inevitably springs dictatorship.
