NHW in black against a white background. The central H is larger than the other two letters which are angled to give the perspective that this is one 3D shape that curves away from the viewer. The top of the stems of the H have crenellations and a portcullis descends from the cross bar giving the H the appearance of a castle with battlements.

Each morning the town's men and boys awake,
Wives and mams feed them,
Hand off tins of dripping stotties, pasties, and pobs,
And wave them out the door,
A flood of men rush down every street,
Collecting others on the way, they find an opening in the earth,
Don ceremonial hats,
Collect eternal flame,
And descend,
11 hours of darkness and dust,
Their toil and their blood fuels empire, Great metal machines traverse the oceans,
While small lungs suffocate on coal dust and sulphur.

A photomechanical print of William Armstrong. A photograph in sepia tones of an old Caucasian man in a 3 piece suite and bow tie. He is balding on the top of his head and wears long sideburns.

Text: Born #OTD in 1810, in Shieldfield, Newcastle: William Armstrong. Most famous for being the father of modern artillery, Armstrong has a slightly complicated legacy. Though his main occupation was in weapons, his Scotswood Road factory employed thousands of workers primarily from the communities of Elswick and Benwell, even in the decades after his death. Not only artillery and weapons, Armstrong built ships, trains, cars, and more.

Text with a photo of the Swing Bridge: Armstrong was an early adopter of both hydraulic engineering and hydroelectricity. His house, Cragside, was the first in the world to be lit entirely by the sustainable energy source. The Swing Bridge which crosses the Tyne is also one of his company's hydraulic engineering works, built 20 years before they took on the mighty Tower Bridge in London. While Tower bridge still operates, the Swing Bridge has been allowed to fall into disrepair due to lack of funding. We'd love to see it move again soon.

In later life, he gave money towards the building of the Hancock Museum, outside of which now stands a statue in his honour. He also bought and restored Bamburgh Castle which remains in the hands of his family. Armstrong was clearly an influence on his heir, nephew William Watson-Armstrong, who paid towards the building of the Royal Victoria Infirmary (the hospital that admin was born in!). A proud supporter of renewables and moving away from coal, this inventor was ahead of his time. There's no doubt that Newcastle, the North, and all of Britain owe a lot to Armstrong.

Born #OTD in 1810: Lord William Armstrong. Have a read about this industrialist. #northernhistoryweek #northernhistory #history #newcastle
