This is a really good summary of why #HS2 and #NorthernPowerhouseRail are probably the wrong solution to our creaking infrastructure.

This is exactly what we need - another example is rather than a big bang project like #NorthernPowerhouseRail it would be better to work through existing bottlenecks, eg the Castlefield Corridor, in order of priority. But this isn’t glamorous and doesn’t make good news headlines.

As to the tunnels, I am not convinced #NorthernPowerhouseRail is the right solution - should be (maybe there is) a plan looking at the Liverpool to Hull/York main line and addressing the bottlenecks in order.
Among these are lack of through platforms at Piccadilly, Leeds & the Castlefield Corridor
(Coming back to this, it’s no good having grandiose projects such as #NorthernPowerhouseRail or a tunnel under Manchester when we can’t complete schemes like additional through platforms at Piccadilly, and so not being able to realise the benefits of the #OrdsallChord)
I’ve come round to the idea that #NorthernPowerhouseRail might not be the right solution for the north given that the distances just aren’t great enough for high speeds to be beneficial.
What *is* needed is more electrification (which increases speed) & removal of bottlenecks in Manchester & Leeds.
Someone argued that what we really need is a Swiss style strategy rather than grand projects, where bottlenecks are addressed in turn. The Ordsall Curve was part of this, but the additional through platforms at Piccadilly needed to get the benefits were never built. #NorthernPowerhouseRail
While that may be true, the argument that the distance between Liverpool and Hull isn’t long enough to benefit from high speed rail, and the real problems are lack of electrification and bottlenecks particularly around Manchester and Leeds is persuasive #NorthernPowerhouseRail

There's a caveat to 'Manchester has been well managed' which is that he doesn't have a lot of actual power (less than e.g. Khan) or accountability, and has been able to deflect blame to central government.
If I were him I'd still be spitting flames about delays to #NorthernPowerhouseRail though.
