This image depicts a monstrous creature at sea spitting up a male figure; the creature has a sea serpent's tail, a horse's abdomen and forelegs, a very thin and snakelike neck, and a porcine head. Pencilled note in right margin, beside it, reads "Jonah" .
Sorry early Christians, this is so #notawhale.
This image is from *De Roma Sotterranea* by Antoine Bosio and has engravings of panels found in early Christian cemeteries.

One more #notawhale before I go a-conferencing, but this whale is a "monstrous animal from Norway" that's not being very nice to the humans it found. My favorite part of this one is the annotations: not one but two manicules pointing to the whale! In case you missed it! (MIT Museum, AF-DI-0685)
a fish-looking creature with long floppy teeth and a water spout coming out of its head. Text on top of image reads "balena nostra prior"
Another edition of 'I don't know what that is, but I'm pretty sure it's #notawhale,' Ulisse Aldrovandi edition. I am sorry, but what on earth are those teeth supposed to be?!
This photo is one of several hand-colored sheets taken out of De piscibus libri V, et De cetis libri I (1613).
The entrance of messieurs Vroncourt, Tyllon, and Marimont on a whale, armed with silver armor, while in the middle of the waves of the sea. Arion rides next to them on another whale while strumming his lute.
I know that #notalion is a thing, but can I interest anyone in #notawhale? Because whatever this is, it's definitely not a whale!
