🌎 White-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)

The white-breasted nuthatch is a compact bird with a large head, short tail, and a long, pointed bill. They have a blue-gray back, stark white cheeks and underparts, and a black or gray cap. A rusty tinge is often visible on their lower belly.

They are widely distributed across temperate North America, from southern Canada to Mexico, preferring mature deciduous and mixed forests.

These agile birds are known for their unique behavior of creeping headfirst down tree trunks and branches while foraging for insects and seeds. They often wedge larger nuts into bark crevices and hammer them open. White-breasted nuthatches typically live in monogamous pairs year-round, defending their territory, and may join mixed-species foraging flocks in winter. 2.5 (Flash Edited)

Nine subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
