My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time 21 March 1945 "Good evening." Stede cocked his hip and fluttered the fingers of one hand over his plumped up bosom. "Welcome to Spanish Jackie's. Reservation?" "Not tonight," said the foremost of the three soldiers at the door. Aha! The agreed signal. That meant these were three of the six that needed to be spirited to safety. "Right. Walk-ins, then," he said, and now he didn't have to feign his cheerfulness. "I've got a peach of a table for you. Follow me." Skirts swaying, he led them on into the depths of the restaurant. Jackie and Swede did own this place, but it was in a village far from where they lived, and far from where Stede and Ed and the crew lived, too. Ed had intercepted some correspondence that hinted at a family trying to reach refuge, and he'd designed this operation to help them cross into Switzerland. The plans had to be set very carefully, and their bona fides established–part of that had involved Stede, Fang, Roach, Frenchie, Pete, and Lucius taking over the management of this lakeside bar-restaurant for the last few weeks, leaving Olu, Jim, Archie, Zheng, Auntie and Izzy to maintain Blackbeard and the Gentleman Resister's usual operations. Roach and Pete worked in the kitchens; Frenchie and Lucius were floor staff; Fang managed the inventory; and John handled deliveries. Stede was the tavern wench. John had designed a lovely outfit for him, inspired by Swiss folkloric designs. Tight across the bust, cinched in at the waist, with lots of lovely leather laces down the front and along the sleeves. They swished delightfully, along with his full skirts, and the long hairs of his blonde wig bounced on his shoulders, as he sauntered here and there about the place. Mostly in front of the counter–where Ed tended bar.

So here Ed sat, in a room called a sauna, wood-panelled on all sides, heated with a brazier of charcoal in the middle of the floor. He recalled Swede speaking of this sort of thing, but there hadn’t been a chance to visit the one Swede had apparently built. Jackie’s eyes had rolled back into her head when speaking of it. Now, Ed understood why. He had lavender-scented oil in his short beard and wintergreen in his hair (because Stede said it complemented his “natural Ed-ness”). The towel wrapped around his waist, rather than lye soap, was faintly tinted with some sort of Marseille concoction and he didn’t want his clothes laundered in any other soap ever again. Stede sat on the opposite plank. He’d chosen citrus, cedar, and vetiver for his scents. He had his eyes closed, and hummed quietly to himself, a new song they’d learned on the road. Sous le pont d’Avignon / on danse, on danse / Sous le pont d’Avignon / on danse / tout ensemble Every stumble of a horse on a rock, every wade through swollen streams, every inn serving nothing but grey bread and a watery stew that made Roach weep, every officious duke or earl they’d had to placate... All of it was in the past. For now, at least, they were warm and dry—and alone together.

Ed appeared in the doorway. He’d let his hair down, curling black and grey against his cheeks, and he was naked. The morning sun gilded his long limbs, softened his lines, backlit his form like a work of art as Ed made his way over and climbed in. Stede, as if observing himself from the ceiling, noticed the way, at the sight of Ed, his mouth fell open, his tongue darted out and licked his lower lip, his heart made itself known in his chest, expanding fit to burst. He flipped aside the blankets and tugged at Ed, limply, hands weak and ineffectual with the force of his desire. Ed, chuckling, rolled over onto him.
