Thatch-mat organic material | Asian Turfgrass Center I’ve looked at soil organic matter (SOM) and OM246 test results for putting greens of different species. In the top 5 cm (that’s about 2 inches), there will be some SOM and there will also be…

New post about calculating the thatch-mat OM value based on the difference between #OM246 and SOM test results.

Organic matter and screens | Asian Turfgrass Center A set of OM246 total organic material samples inadvertently got a grinding and sieving process just like normal soil samples.1 As you probably know, a key distinction of OM246 testing is that soil…

I've got some new test results showing a 45% decrease in total organic material when OM2 samples are sieved prior to burning. #OM246

Sand and nitrogen amounts: how I figure it out | Asian Turfgrass Center A friend is in charge of a type of grass he hasn’t grown before. We went to look at the grass, and on the way to the golf course, he told me that someone had told him the grass didn’t need much sand t...

Here's how I'd find how much sand and N to use, rather than relying on hearsay. #ClipVol #OM246

What if it was never there? | Asian Turfgrass Center I’ve been thinking about this one a lot. It seems obvious that a sward supplied with more nitrogen fertilizer will tend to produce more organic material in the soil. It also seems obvious that a…

If the organic matter doesn't get produced in the first place, we don't need to be as worried about breaking it down, removing it, or diluting it. #TurfHacks #OM246

This one simple trick can transform putting greens from usually good to consistently great | Asian Turfgrass Center What’s the trick? It is measuring the soil organic matter in the green, over time, and then adjusting the maintenance work. The purpose of this is to simultaneously produce a putting surface with the…

When I prepare an #OM246 report for a facility doing this testing for the first time, I include interpretation advice that I first wrote about in this blog post.

OM246 measures living organic material too | Asian Turfgrass Center Remember, the OM246 test measures the total organic material, living and dead. A 4 cm diameter core of fine-bladed manilagrass with extensive living plant material below the surface. If the grass has…

In this new ATC blog post about #OM246, I point out some of the desirable living OM in the soil, and suggest that trying to get the OM2 as low as possible is not how I'd approach this.

Nitrogen rate, pendulum swings, and anchoring | The ATC Doublecut with Micah Woods | Episode 163 Did you know there was a time when up to to 2 lbs N per 1000 square feet per growing month, the equivalent of 100 kg of actual N per ha per month, was a standard recommendation for putting green…

New #ATC2x episode about pendulum swings in N supply and sand topdressing. Are #ClipVol, #TurfGvX, and #OM246 anything different? I suggest it will take some decades to find out, but I think they are. Also, industry veterans, historical N rates, & more #TurfHacks.

How much organic matter is too much? | Asian Turfgrass Center I was teaching a seminar about the distinction between soil organic matter (humus) and total organic material, and how to make use of those test results, when this question was posed:

This question comes up sometimes, about the maximum level of organic material that one can tolerate in the soil. The best way to answer this is to find out for yourself with #OM246 testing. Here are my general answers.

OM246 calculator updated | Asian Turfgrass Center I’ve updated the OM246 calculator to v2 with two substantial changes. One is an entirely new tab for unit conversions between different ways of expressing sand rates. I like mm. Others use kg/ha or tons/ha.

New on the ATC website, a comprehensive update to the #OM246 calculator. Includes precise calculation of sand requirement to achieve a selected organic matter level at any rootzone depth, and conversions for topdressing rate amounts in common units.
