Commissioner Costas Kadis:

“The #OceanAct will integrate all ocean objectives into a single framework, simplifying rules & aligning blue economy with environmental protection.”
The ocean is not just environmental, it’s strategic for #Europe’s future.

🌊 What if the ocean became one of Europe’s strongest strategic priorities?
At #EuropeanOceanDays in Brussels, @Europe Jacques Delors & @Oceano Azul Foundation launched “Building an #OceanUnion: Blueprint for a Transformative #OceanAct” – shaping a unified EU ocean policy.

Ein starker #OceanAct muss her! 🇪🇺🌊💪 1/3

Europe needs to enforce ocean laws 🌊

The European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the #OceanAct closed yesterday – and it received nearly 800 responses. That level of engagement shows just how high the stakes are.

🌊Europe has a unique chance to protect the ocean.

The #OceanAct must not only coordinate but deliver: fix implementation gaps, #EndBottomTrawling in MPAs, stop #PaperParks, protect 30% of EU seas (10% strictly), and put coastal communities first.

The EU #OceanAct must drive a just transition to low-impact activities that protect coastal communities, ensure sustainable livelihoods, & support a regenerative #BlueEconomy.

Giving low-impact fishers preferential access to all EU coastal waters, is key to this. #MakeFishingFair

❌The EU is failing to meet its #30x30 target, with 10% under strict protection.

The EU #OceanAct must turn voluntary targets into legally binding ones to ensure action, accountability, and not allow marine #paperparks in the EU!

Just copy-pasting the EU’s existing targets into the new #OceanAct would be fairly meaningless.

Ambitions like protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030—agreed by the EU but not yet in law—must be added.

🌱 A precautionary approach and one that makes sense on Blue Carbon, prioritizing restoration and protection over the dvp of blue carbon credits.

We look forward to continuing this dialogue with you & working together to turn ambition into action.

We’re here at #UNOC3 🎉 One of our top asks to @ec.europa.eu is to get a legally binding #OceanAct out of the #OceanPact - a message our Exec Director shared with @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu & Commissioner Kadis🤝 Their presence here sets the right tone that #OurOcean needs all the attention it can get.

The promised Ocean Act needs to cut through the confusion and contradiction to ensure the ocean is truly protected and the EU commits firmly to a regenerative blue economy" Says Monica Verbeek, Executive Director, Seas At Risk

Today's final #OceanPact contains:
✅ The good (no to #DeepSeaMining)
❌ The bad (weak commitment on funding)
💩 And the ugly (no action to #BanBottomTrawling in MPAs)
The #OceanAct is promising & could pave the way for a healthy ocean, but *only* if it's bold & binding. #UNOC3
