Last day of Museums Week and the theme is #OceansMW

Our History Haven crew made fantastic ocean themed dioramas yesterday, while learning how difficult a situation our oceanic environment is facing due to pollutants.

And we all love this wonderful octopus in ‘Aquatilibus [On things that live in the water]’ by Pierre Belon, 1553.

The text notes the octopus can change colours: ‘now white, then red, then livid, then distinguished by various shades.’

Such as the Common Trout, Northern Char & Flying Fish in ‘The natural history of British fishes’, with illustrations drawn by James Hope Stewart, 1843.

So, a slightly tenuous link to today’s #MuseumWeek theme, #OceansMW, but here’s a lifebelt from HMS Cornwallis. The ship transported the 2nd Bn, SWB, from China to Gallipoli in 1915. The ship was sunk off Malta in January 1917 after being torpedoed by a German submarine. Fifteen lives were lost.

During the D-Day channel crossing, allied soldiers used an aboriginal Australian sea sickness remedy made from corkwood trees.

It turned out to be a good source of scopolamine, a common ingredient in seasickness remedies like this to this day.
