Completed #Oililly tote with new leather shoulder strap.
Ok, one side of the #Oililly tote replacement leather strap is done, working on the other side. Alternated the splice angles,, and gluing some non-woven material at the joint.
1) Working on the replacement leather strap for the #Oililly tote. It's going to need to be spliced,, so I diagonal cut the locations and zigzag stitched to splice leather strips to get the right length. The top piece gets 1 splice, the bottom will get 2.
Ok, car wanted to act pissy and needed to be jump started this afternoon, so I used discretion and did not go to the Renaissance Faire today. Instead I finished the work on @cwalworth.bsky.social's #Oililly tote. All straps and tabs replaced with new leather ones
#sewing, #RepairNotReplace,
Now that all the pieces for the #Oililly tote are stitched together, I'm coating the edges with a blend of Angelus leather paints I whipped up.
I could have futzed around with color matching a little bit more, but I think I did a good job.
Picture of a work table with a can of contact cement on a cardboard piece at the top and at the bottom the original strap showing sections of ivory bonded/composite leather where the dark tan top layer had worn away and below that a lighter pinkish tan goatskin leather replacement strap
Close up of a strap end, the thread and leather are almost identical in color.
One replacement strap sewn for the #Oililly tote. The thread really matches.
And unlike the original, which was some weird bonded /composite leather abomination with a very thin top layer, the replacements won't peal and flake apart.
Do people want a refresher on the steps and materials used?
