This shot was made on the shoulder of State Road #191 between Moab Utah and Interstate 70 as an unseen Raven far above in the brilliant blue sky dropped a wing feather which landed at my feet as I made this image with my little Canon A5. It did incredibly good intimate capture of textures, especially...

I posted that wing feather earlier today. It has had a very storied past with me for the last 26 years. The title of that work, is "Into the Mystic." It's of an aged, pale tan ragged feather quill resting on a sienna, reddish brown wooden painting panel. It's casting a very powerful shadow. That should help you find it.

What you are looking at here is the face of one of the bridge abutments on a low rudimentary bridge above a wash I crossed over before noticing the incredible archaic patina. The case-hardened concrete I would place in the 1930's era Civilian Conservation Corps works program. The ancient thick black bitumen paint is now almost completely gone (speaking in the now of 2025) for I stopped to visit the bridge again a couple of years ago. I did not photograph it though. I had an odd feeling about it. I heeded that oddness and just nodded to it, said my goodbyes, and headed north. This is a shot which I love for I felt I was channeling Siskind, and then the feather alighted at my feet. It was a good, auspicious day.
