In school area reviews, MCDOT has been a firm proponent of #OneMoreSignWillFixIt. For example,

Problem: parents park where there are NO PARKING signs.
Solution: more NO PARKING signs!

Not making this up.

Q: What does it mean when there's a CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP sign under a stop sign at a 4-way intersection with 2-way stop?

A: It means the intersection should be a 4-way stop, but the DOT said no.

There have been multiple requests for #SafeRoutesToSchool sidewalks here.

Instead, MCDOT added signs, cuz #OneMoreSignWillFixit.

An unmarked crosswalk with detectable warning surfaces. People who are walking or rolling on the sidewalk would use this unmarked crosswalk to cross an alley that provides garage access to two rows of attached houses with their backs to each other. The caption is: Photo 1. Taken from northwest corner looking eastbound along Public House Road at the north leg crossing. Approximate crash location.

The infrastructure review does not recommend marking the unmarked crosswalk.👀

Also: "Vehicles are parked along Public House Road on both sides of the street despite the “No Parking” signs." #OneMoreSignWillFixIt

This intersection is not a four-way stop, because that would delay drivers on Old Hundred Rd/109. Instead, #OneMoreSignWillFixIt ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They could protect William B Gibbs ES walkers by separating the left turn phase from the WALK phase. But that would cause vehicle delay! So instead, a sign.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #OneMoreSignWillFixIt

Needs ANOTHER sign telling drivers to yield to pedestrians.

A driver is turning right on green while a person pushing a stroller is in a marked crosswalk with WALK. The image is annotated with a red circle on the mast arm of the facing traffic signal, labeled no sign.

Guess what happened at the intersection of Gaither Rd & Piccard Dr between June 2021 (image on left) and September 2022 (image on right)?

The best example of #OneMoreSignWillFixIt is with the school safety audits.

Problem: people are ignoring the no-parking signs.
Solution: more no-parking signs.

Google Authoritarian Streetview of a driver turning left on green across the marked crosswalk, like the driver in the crash. There is no Turning Vehicles Yield To Pedestrians sign on the traffic signal mast arm, yet.

Expect the Safe Routes to School infrastructure review to include a recommendation for a Turning Vehicles Yield To Pedestrians sign.

Exclusive protected left (left on green arrow only) would inconvenience drivers/cause vehicle delay.

"the motorist was bypassing the vehicles stopped for school traffic and had obstructed visibility when the incident happened...The visibility obstruction is likely due to vehicles parked too close to the intersection in violation of existing parking restrictions."

Note the "turning vehicles yield to pedestrians" sign.

When you see one of those, you know that somebody asked a DOT to do something to make the intersection less dangerous for people who are walking, and the DOT responded by ... putting up a sign.

MCDOT's infrastructure review recommendation:

1. Recommend installing “Turning Vehicles Yield to Pedestrians” signs on signal mast arm displays
for all approaches.

(Not explained: how #OneMoreSignWillFixIt will work with distracted drivers.)

Is this a sub-skeet about a DOT that thinks #OneMoreSignWillFixIt ?

Cutting the corner to beat the light OVER THE CURB? Yikes.

Whatever the problem, it must be really bad for them to put up an actual steel and concrete bollard instead of #OneMoreSignWillFixIt.

Google Streetview of a high-speed slip lane at an intersection designed to move lots of cars fast with a maximum of asphalt. The marked crosswalk across the slip lane has a "yield to pedestrians" sign, which most drivers are probably going too fast to even notice.

"There is nothing before the crosswalks to alert motorists that humans might be present in the roadway."

Not so! There's a sign! #OneMoreSignWillFixIt

Satellite image of a large four-way intersection, with four marked crosswalks, plus a service road on one side. Three of the corners have houses, and the fourth has a neighborhood shopping center with a parking lot. There is a paved off-road trail between the service road and the main road for part of the way, and the service road is labeled as a signed one-road route for the rest of the way. There is also a bus stop pair on the north side of the intersection, next to and across from the shopping center.

In 13 months at MD28 & Baltimore Rd in Rockville,
THREE non-motorists (pedestrian, bicyclist, scooter user)
who were crossing in a crosswalk with a walk signal
were hit by drivers turning left.

But MDSHA says:

❌ "a protected left turn phase is not currently warranted"
✔️ #OneMoreSignWillFixIt

DOTs could install left turn on green arrow only (exclusive protected left turn phasing). But then drivers would have to wait longer at the signal! So they go with #OneMoreSignWillFixIt, instead.

Yet again, a driver has crashed into the beg button pole for crossing Clopper Rd/117 on the west side of the Germantown Rd/118 intersection.

And maybe it's even true that #OneMoreSignWillFixIt - but MD SHA hasn't put up the sign yet.🤷

Maybe it needs two signs.
