Andrew Coyne 🇺🇦🇮🇱🇬🇪🇲🇩 @acoyne So that's some tremendous mandate Doug Ford won in his unnecessary and arguable illegal (election dates are fixed by law in Ontario) snap election: 43 per cent of the vote, on turnout of 45 per cent, means he has the support of *19 per cent* of the eligible voters. Nonetheless under our system that entitles him to nearly two-thirds of the seats and allows him to rule more or less unopposed — the legislature is basically powerless to hold him to account in any serious way — for the next four years or until he decides to pull the same stunt again. Meanwhile the Liberals got nearly twice as many votes as the NDP — 30 per cent to 18.5 — but will receive barely half as many seats. The Tories got a little over one-third more votes than the Liberals, but will get six times as many seats. This is the second straight election in Ontario where fewer than half the eligible voters turned out to vote. I can't say I blame them.

Or did they!! Here's the breakdown folks. In Ontario, we have 11,065,813 registered voters. We just had a voter turnout of roughly 45.4%. Of those, 43% voted for Dougie's PC's. That means 5,023,879 voted! 2,160,268 voted for Doug. You know like 18% of eligible voters.
The Conservatives gained one seat. The NDP lost one. The Liberals gained 4. The government and official opposition remain the same. The Liberal leader still doesn’t have a seat. Turnout is tied with the lowest ever. We probably could’ve done without this election. #onpoli #ontariovotes
