3/11 The megacomet's journey is epic in scale:
🔸 Currently over 20x Earth-Sun distance away
🔸 Closest approach to Sun: 2031 (near Saturn's orbit)
🔸 Orbital distance: 55,000x Earth-Sun distance
🔸 That's 87% of a light-year into the Oort Cloud
Epic journey.

4/11 We know passing stars can stir up the Oort Cloud—that vast halo of trillions of icy bodies stretching over a light-year from the Sun.
This could send hundreds or thousands of comets careening toward the inner solar system, potentially triggering mass extinctions.

A digitized 35mm astrophoto of Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) taken a few days after its perihelion passage on April 1, 1997. The image shows the comet's distinct dust and ion tails against a backdrop of stars. The photo was hand-guided for 10 minutes using a telephoto lens piggybacked on a small telescope.

A stunning telescopic image of Comet C/2025 F2 SWAN, showcasing its greenish coma and faint ion tail against a backdrop of stars in the constellation Andromeda. Captured in June Lake, California, on April 14, this image highlights the comet's journey from the distant Oort cloud towards its perihelion on May 1. The comet's distinct green hue is due to diatomic carbon molecules fluorescing in sunlight.

Two versions of a cartoonish asteroid, one with large googly eyes, the other with smaller eyes but huge pupils.
Had a busy evening working out which kind of eyes give an asteroid just the right level of expressiveness. I want to hit 'emotive' but fall short of 'anthropomorphised', which probably means no mouths or eyebrows.

If my maths is right, a comet who wanted at least 5% of the Oort cloud’s 20 trillion space rocks to sign a petition against the inevitable incursion of the star Gliese 710 would need to personally convince 42 comets during their 1.2 million year word-of-mouth campaign.
