Hello from the lovely #Opicina 🇮🇹 #tram. The line climbs from the port city of #Trieste up to the Karst plateau. On the steepest section, a rope-operated pod pushes the tramcar up (and slows it down on its way back) making it a sort of #funicular. The trams were built 90 years ago, in 1935.

Arrived in #Trieste, did an in-person check-in at the hosting agency, and took bus 64 up to #Opicina. Apartment is OK, especially considering the low price. Balcony, but not much of a view. Probably need to go out now to find a place from where to see the sunset over the Adriatic. #Interrail

Still no #tram in sight on the #Trieste 🇮🇹 to #Opicina line, when I quickly stopped at its downtown terminus at Piazza Oberdan today. Newspaper articles, however, mentioned these days that a re-opening might be imminent, probably even for 2024. (Or 2025, 2026 etc, as people say.)
The #Trieste 🇮🇹 to #Opicina tram is still “fuori servizio”. Resumption of traffic is (again) a rather distant perspective.
Meanwhile, the lovely “Bar alla Tramvia” at the upper terminus continues serving coffee, drinks and snacks, to potential passengers and tram spotters alike.
At #Opicina 🇮🇹 station earlier today. An #ÖBB 🇦🇹 Class 1216 #E190 #Taurus in #nightjet livery has hauled #EuroCity #Emona up the ramp from #Trieste. An #SŽ 🇸🇮 Class 342, nicknamed #Moped, takes over. It’s a short consist: three ÖBB open plan 2nd class carriages only. No 1st class, no bicycle van today.
Bad news for the #Trieste to #Opicina #tram: new requirements to be met before traffic resumes (or thereafter, that’s the question).

When visiting #Opicina 🇮🇹, a stop at the lovely “Bar alla Tramvia” is always part of our programme. However, once again, there aren’t any trams operating on the line to and from #Trieste, a line which includes a funicular section. Some paperwork is still outstanding, we are told.
The (non-)resumption of traffic on the #Trieste 🇮🇹 to #Opicina tram line: a never-ending story. I briefly stooped at the upper terminus earlier this week, for coffee at the “Bar alla Tramvia”. There was plenty of activity going on in the workshops - yet it seems that the start of service is far away.
