"Designated sites where people can use pre-obtained substances under the safety and support of trained personnel." -National Harm Reduction Coalition >SCS in the U.S.: • July 2021: Rhode Island becomes first state to authorize SCS in the U.S. • November 2021: New York City opens the first publicly recognized SCS in the U.S. • There is progress in the U.S., but compared to the other 14 countries that already have SCS in operation, this is only the beginning.
Slide containing the following text in relation to safe consumption sites: >A CALL FOR CHANGE: DRUG OVERDOSE DEATHS IN THE U.S. >Comparison with other Countries: • Overdose deaths from all drug types are much higher in the U.S. than most other countries. • The percentage of overdose deaths caused by Opioids specifically is much higher than other countries. The photo also displays 2 graphs, one comparing the overdose or drug-related death rate per 1 million of various countries where data is available (2019, 2020, 2021). The United States had the highest rate than any other country in 2020 and 2021. The other graph displays the percent of overall overdose or drug-related deaths from opioids only among 5 countries (AUS, SCOUT, NOR, SWE, U.S.) in 2021. The United States had a significantly high percentage of 66%. The next highest were NOR and SWE, both with just 18%.
Displaying data from other countries with established consumption/injection sites such as Canada and Australia. Data shows that SCSs have been highly effective in reducing the number of drug-related deaths/overdoses. The data also suggests that SCSs provide increased public health measures as significantly less public injections and less improper needle disposal has occurred since the opening of these sites in other countries.
