Calling weavers, the dreamers, tree-singers, marsh dwellers and undergrowth bards. I’m dedicating the winter to putting audio and written stories in front of you.

Hala told "The Stork Caliph" at the World Storytelling Cafe via Zoom from her home in Gaza in 2020. It’s a wonderful story, and Hala told it brilliantly, adding her own details and embellishments to make it her own, as all great storytellers do.

I recorded a video of myself retelling Hala’s story for the Tell A Child In Gaza’s Tale project. The project was started by David Heathfield and Haneen Khaled Jadallah. It’s still ongoing. You can get involved by watching and sharing the videos – or even better, by retelling a Gazan child’s story yourself.

Be careful what you put up your nose. Especially if it’s dust from a box you’ve just been handed by a wizard.

“The Stork Caliph” is a story I learned from a Gazan girl named Hala. I retold it for Tell A Child In Gaza’s Tale.

My so-called video studio, which was actually a very messy room cluttered with a floor lamp, cables, a laptop propped up on a box on top of a kitchen chair, and a whole load of other stuff that really wasn't helping.

Spent the afternoon recording a storytelling video. The finished video is 6 minutes long. The recording process took, um... longer. Maybe I should stick to what I know, i.e. bellowing analogue stories at people in a field. #OralStorytelling

Groovy props from charity shops, episode 94: snapped up this rather excellent tree lamp yesterday. A bit fairylike (Carterhaugh, not Sugar Plum, obvs). Coming soon to a storytelling session near you.

(PS I’m in the photo. Can you spot me?)

"People tend to listen to and believe stories more than facts, which makes storytelling a powerful tool. … It’s hard to hate someone when you’ve heard their story. If we could get people to sit in a room and listen to each other, we could change things for the better."

And it’s so important to remember that sharing stories isn’t limited to reading aloud. Sharing and encouraging #OralStorytelling boosts oracy, imagination, improvisation, empathy, confidence, playfulness, cultural capital, classroom community. But not the ability to count to 4 in my case, apparently

Had a blast on Friday night telling “Tales of Darkness and Dread” to a sold-out #IsleOfWight audience alongside the fabulous Holly Medland. Everyone went home with a shiver and a smile – including quite a few who'd never seen live #OralStorytelling before. I think we made some converts.
