Great reasons to vote for #molybdenite!
I think most of us are finding the final match a difficult decision. 🫠
Both ores deserve the win.

The rise and decline of Old Copper Culture tools, starting with the Midcontinent Rift System that generated the largest native #copper deposits in the world.
Was the copper just too pure? 😮
Watch and learn.

Check out the array of Old Copper Culture tools and points hammered out of float #copper.
Float copper … almost pure copper ore carried from Upper Michigan to Wisconsin by glaciers.

Learning about Old Copper Culture in North America ca. 4000-1500 BC. I should know about this — born and living in Wisconsin — but apparently not covered in grade school or high school history classes.
So THANKS! #MinCup #OreCup #OreCup25

The other day, I replied to J. Raasch that I voted for #Copper because it was so old, and I voted for #Molybdenite because it was so new. What a wonderful match for the Finals! Two essential elements. How to vote?

We didn’t always recognize #Molybdenite or know how to use Mo until the late 19th Century. Rh wasn’t discovered until 1908. After early experiments during WWI, automobile and aviation industries found uses for both elements in high-performance alloys. Then catalysts and medical uses.

A conglomerate with the iron oxide replaced by native copper. From Calumet and Hekla Mine, Michigan. University of Waterloo Earth Sciences Museum Collection. https://uwaterloo.ca/earth-sciences-museum/resources/detailed-rocks-and-minerals-articles/copper
Native copper in a sedimentary conglomerate. It is proposed that detrital hematite reacts with copper sulfate solutions to reduce the copper and the fluids carry away the iron and sulfur.

I’m voting for native #Copper, and its continuous importance to pre-historic and modern civilizations. Copper inspires art, music, architecture, tools, weaponry, medicine, energy distribution, and technology.

Wow. I was focused on the molybdenum part of #Molybdenite.
Is molybdenite truly the primary source of rhenium?
If so, I’m thinking #Rhenium is where the action is. Check out the applications. One super critical element for our current world.

Copper, Ilmenite, Molybdenite, or Bornite …
It appears the social media audience wants an old ore with some history instead of an exciting relatively new mineral ore. 🧐

I’m voting for the only Co ore in the Ore Cup, the superconductor mineral #Carrollite. Co serves many industrial, medical, and artistic applications, from battery and magnet technology, to radiotherapy, to glass and ceramic glaze coloring agent.

A screen shot from James Rada, Jr.'s article on Carroll Co., Maryland and carrollite. Has a nice photo of carrollite, not from Maryland (the local samples are not photogenic).
Nice article on the type locality of #carrollite : Carroll County, Maryland and the Patapsco Mine.

Voting for #Ilmenite.
I could be wrong, but right now I feel titanium is the more critical material for a cleaner future.
Lithium is a temporary bridge — or should be a temporary bridge — to better, cleaner, sustainable successors.
Huge negative environmental impact for lithium mining.
#OreCup25
#Jadarite is a unique and valuable Li and B ore that would require large quantities of fresh water and generate liquid and airborne pollution. Will organized public opposition effectively hold a government-sanctioned mining consortium accountable for protecting the environment?

Still on the fence — due to voting glitch — but that’s a very pretty rock.

Current results showing Molybdenite has very narrow lead.
Tough decision and close race.
I’ve finally decided … but … 😱
There was just a glitch blocking my attempt to vote, so you all have a few more hours to change my mind.

What makes the greatest ore, tho? Sulfides crystallize at higher temperatures and have simpler molecular structures. Sulfosalts precipitate at lower temperatures, have greater solubility, plus bonus semi-metals. I’m voting for the sulfosalt, #Tetrahedrite.

Hey #Palia gamers, my character's name is Galena Pb Sulphide. Galena was my college geology nickname. Vote #Galena in today's #OreCup matchup, and help Galena become the ore mineral of the year! #OreCup25
Shiny galena
In today's #OreCup25 I vote for #galena because of its historic use as a pigment.
Look at this shiny sample from the Harz Mountains/Germany!
