East Anglian Pastoral #3 - Brown Bunny (oil on canvas 50cm x 40cm)
Brown Bunny was the unofficial Rainbow Code name for the development during the Cold War of a nuclear land mine at Orford Ness in Suffolk.
Thankfully, it never made it off the drawing board...

"Black and white landscape photograph showing an abandoned or incomplete fence with weathered concrete posts arranged in a row across an open, grassy field. In the foreground right stands a deteriorating petrol pump. The scene features dramatic cumulus clouds against a dark sky, with flat marshland or coastal terrain stretching to the horizon, where distant buildings and trees are visible. The composition emphasizes themes of decay, abandonment, and the stark beauty of desolate landscapes."

A weathered brick structure stands abandoned in an overgrown grassland beneath a dramatic sky filled with billowing cumulus clouds. The building, partially collapsed with crumbling walls and a deteriorating roof, features a dark doorway opening into its interior. To the right, the skeletal remains of a fence structure stretch across the landscape, its posts tilted at various angles. Wild grasses and vegetation have reclaimed the area, swaying in the foreground while distant trees line the horizon. The black and white treatment emphasizes the stark textures and the sense of desolation in this rural scene.

A dramatic black and white landscape photograph capturing a vast, windswept plain stretching toward the horizon under heavy, brooding storm clouds. In the foreground, rough grassland shows weathered tracks or paths cutting through the terrain, with a solitary fence post standing at an angle. The middle distance reveals what appear to be fortified structures or military installations silhouetted against the turbulent sky. The composition emphasizes the stark contrast between light and shadow, with breaks in the dense cloud cover allowing shafts of light to illuminate patches of the landscape below, creating a moody, atmospheric scene that conveys both the remoteness and raw power of nature in this exposed setting.

The pagodas on Orford Ness as viewed from Orford Quay. The "pagodas" at Orford Ness are distinctive, pagoda-like concrete structures that served as part of a Cold War-era atomic weapons testing facility. These structures were actually test cells designed to simulate the conditions a bomb might experience before detonation, including vibration, extreme temperatures, and shocks. They were also designed to contain an explosion, with roofs intended to collapse and the surrounding shingle to help absorb the blast. @nationaltrust.org.uk
Orford Ness, on the Suffolk coast, is Europe’s largest vegetated shingle spit. It was once a secret military testing site for radar & weapons during both World Wars and the Cold War. Today, it’s a unique nature reserve, home to rare plants, marshland birds and historic military buildings #OrfordNess
Weathered turquoise fuel pump stands abandoned on barren ground in foreground, with wooden fence posts, golden marsh grasslands, and distant village buildings including a prominent tower visible under overcast sky.

Orford Ness is unique. There is truly no other place like it.
Haunting Orford Ness on the Suffolk coast. The site acquired by War Department in 1913 & used until 1980s for weapons testing & experimental military work. Included work in 1930s which led to development of radar. In 1950s site used for work on Atomic Bomb
