PHOENIX MOSAIC, 475-500 CE. MUSÉE DU LOUVRE This huge mosaic is deceptive, as it was reconstituted on a smaller scale, about 25 square metres altogether, from its lacunar original. It once formed the floor of a courtyard in a late-antique villa in Daphné, a luxurious suburb of the city of Antioch on the Orontes. Constantine himself had a villa here. This mosaic is like a large rug, with a very limited chromatic range: yellow-white limestone for the background, and for the most part otherwise brown and dark grey marble. Touches of red are perceptible as well. At centre is a stylised mountain with a phœnix atop it, recognisable by the halo-like rays from its head: it represents Christ, but also the convert who is reborn in the Christian faith. All around this central element is a field of rosebuds, a repeating regular pattern, and framing the whole is a border of antelopes, in pairs facing each other, horns, head, and shoulders only, emerging from a sort of acanthus plant that sprouts a poppy between the two antelopes.
