Qifrey purchased a version that was a simple wooden box with a sliding lid. He couldn’t store the sound he really wanted to hold onto, not if he wanted to keep his promise, so instead he recorded music. “It’s really not the same,” Olruggio opined, arms crossed, head tilted, eyes closed. “Not like the real thing at all.” “That may be, but it’s still quite pleasant. I can open the box and play the music whenever I want.” “It’s nice when you need soothing, but just to enjoy it? No. Isn’t it so much better to stick to real music, the kind with soul? A rare experience is more special by default.” It was quite surprising to see his friend so adamant on the subject. Qifrey smiled, charmed and curious. “You’ve been thinking about it since the performance, haven’t you?” They were resting in a private room at an inn, halfway through their journey to renew various beast-repelling spells and repair what they could of the crumbling infrastructure of the countryside. It was late, but they’d both rushed here in a frenzy of new ideas, and spent hours scribbling away at their respective projects with barely a word exchanged. Now, they sat on cushions by a low table, in the sputtering light of their last candle, surrounded by notebooks and loose parchment.
Olruggio was working on trapping light in stone. Qifrey’s project was more challenging--a version of sylph shoes that would allow the wearer to walk on water. It would be quite useful to riverfolk, but so far, Qifrey had failed to come up with a solution to the issue of water shifting constantly, a highly unstable surface. “It’s a broader philosophical discussion,” Olruggio said. “Does indulging in a poor substitute of what you really want damage your relationship with the real thing? Would you grow to appreciate real music less if you relied on your box too often for too long? Convenience is a powerful driving force, one that doesn’t always push us towards the best outcomes.” He shrugged, yawning. “I suppose I’m suspicious of it, is all.” Qifrey could have told him, with confidence developed over many years, that no, allowing oneself to enjoy a substitute did nothing to the hunger for the thing itself. Instead, he laughed. “Suspicious of a solution too convenient? What a stance to take for a maker of contraptions.” “Yeah? I think it’s worse for a future teacher to place too much trust in easy solutions.” They bickered late into the night, overslept the next morning, and barely managed to reach their next planned stop before sunset.
